First Love

In this study we will discuss who, or what the bible is talking about when it uses the term first love. There are many confusing and inaccurate teaching on this subject in many religious bodies. There are those who claim that the first love is the first Church, Tabernacle, or Religious body one associates with. Our objective is to look through the scriptures and bring clarity to this subject and answer the following questions.

  • What or who is the first love?
  • Who has found the first love as defined in scripture?
  • How do we leave our first love?
  • What is spiritual fornication and adultery?
“To the angel of the assembly in Ephesus write: “He who holds the seven stars in his right hand, he who walks among the seven golden menorot says these things: “I know your works, and your toil and perseverance, and that you can’t tolerate evil men, and have tested those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and found them false. (Revelation 2:1-2 RNEB)

They have tested those who say they’re the messenger of the anointed and found them to be liars. The way you test someone is by asking questions and listening to what they say to see if there in agreement with the laws of Elohim.

You have perseverance and have endured for my name’s sake, and have not grown weary. BUT I HAVE THIS AGAINST YOU, THAT YOU LEFT YOUR FIRST LOVE. (Revelation 2:3-4 RNEB)

To properly understand this we must first know who’s speaking.

This is the Revelation of Yahshua the Anointed, which Elohim gave him to show to his servants the things which must happen soon, which he sent and made known by his angel to his servant, Yochanan, (Revelation 1:1 RNEB)

YAH said if there be a prophet among you, I will make myself known to him in a vision, I will speak with him in a dream. (Num 12:6). A prophet speaks the words of Elohim, they don’t speak there own words, Yahshua has nothing to say. The book of Revelation from beginning to end are the words of Elohim, given to Yahshua who gave them to Yochanan by dispatching an angel. So when we read in Revelation chapter two where it says they left there first love, we need to remove Yahshua from the equation since Elohim is the one speaking.

You shall have no other elohims before me. (Exodus 20:3 RNEB)

This is Elohim talking.

and showing loving kindness to thousands of THOSE WHO LOVE ME and keep my commandments. (Exodus 20:6 RNEB)
Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which YAH your Elohim commanded to teach you, that you might do them in the land where you go over to possess it; that you might fear YAH your Elohim, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, you, and your son, and your son’s son, all the days of your life; and that your days may be prolonged. Hear therefore, Yisra’el, and observe to do it; that it may be well with you, and that you may increase mightily, as YAH, the Elohim of your fathers, has promised to you, in a land flowing with milk and honey. Hear, Yisra’el: YAH is our Elohim; YAH is one: AND YOU SHALL LOVE YAH YOUR ELOHIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT. (Deuteronomy 6:1-5 RNEB)

We should love YAH with all of our heart, soul, and might.

Now, Yisra’el, what does YAH your Elohim require of you, but to fear YAH your Elohim, to walk in all his ways, AND TO LOVE HIM, AND TO SERVE YAH YOUR ELOHIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, (Deuteronomy 10:12 RNEB)

These are Elohims words, when we go to the book of Revelation, we read you have left your first love, one of the things they believe in Christianity is that this means there forsaking the Messiah, however if they had forsaken the Messiah they wouldn’t have been a Messianic assembly.

But I have a few things against you, because you have there some who hold the teaching of Bil`am, who taught Balak to throw a stumbling block before the children of Yisra’el, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit sexual immorality [literally harlotry]. (Revelation 2:14 RNEB)

This means there were various forms of strange teaching in the assembly. The term sexual immorality, Strong’s #G4203 means the act of harlotry and figuratively means practicing idolatry. Spiritual fornication or immorality happens when you forsake Elohim’s covenant, or compromise it with other religious thoughts and dispositions.

The word of YAH came to me, saying, Go, and cry in the ears of Yerushalayim, saying, Thus says YAH, I REMEMBER FOR YOU THE DEVOTION OF YOUR YOUTH, THE LOVE OF YOUR BRIDEHOOD; how you went after me in the wilderness, in a land that was not sown. Yisra’el [was] holiness to YAH, the first fruits of his increase: all who devour him shall be held guilty; evil shall come on them, says YAH. (Jeremiah 2:1-2 RNEB)

YAH was Yisrael’s first love.

Hear you the word of YAH, O house of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Yisra’el: thus says YAH, What unrighteousness have your fathers found in me, that they have gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain? Neither said they, Where is YAH who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, who led us through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and of pits, through a land of drought and of the shadow of death, through a land that none passed through, and where no man lived? I brought you into a plentiful land, to eat the fruit of it and the goodness of it; but when you entered, you defiled my land, and made my heritage an abomination. THE PRIESTS DIDN’T SAY, WHERE IS YAH? AND THOSE WHO HANDLE THE LAW DIDN’T KNOW ME: the rulers also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Ba`al [the Lord], and walked after things that do not profit. (Jeremiah 2:3-8 RNEB)
They say, If a man put away his wife, and she go from him, and become another man’s, will he return to her again? Won’t that land be greatly polluted? BUT YOU HAVE PLAYED THE PROSTITUTE WITH MANY LOVERS; YET RETURN AGAIN TO ME, SAYS YAH. Lift up your eyes to the bare heights, and see; where have you not been lain with? By the ways have you sat for them, as an Arabian in the wilderness; and YOU HAVE POLLUTED THE LAND WITH YOUR PROSTITUTION AND WITH YOUR WICKEDNESS. (Jeremiah 3:1-2 RNEB)

They had all forsaken the covenant that Elohim made with them. Yisrael was YAH’s first and YAH was Yisrael’s first love.

Therefore the showers have been withheld, and there has been no latter rain; yet you have a prostitute’s forehead, you refused to be ashamed. Will you not from this time cry to me, My Father, you are the guide of my youth? (Jeremiah 3:3-4 RNEB)
Only acknowledge your lawlessness, that you have transgressed against YAH your Elohim, and have scattered your ways to the strangers under every green tree, and you have not obeyed my voice, says YAH. Return, backsliding children, says YAH; for I am a husband to you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Tziyon: and I WILL GIVE YOU SHEPHERDS ACCORDING TO MY HEART, WHO SHALL FEED YOU WITH KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. (Jeremiah 3:13-15 RNEB)

We don’t go to an ecclesiastical institution to hear someone’s personal thoughts or agenda. We’re there to hear Elohims word for spiritual liberation and salvation.

not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they broke, although I was a husband to them, says YAH. (Jeremiah 31:32 RNEB)

Elohim was Yisrael’s first fruits.

FOR YOUR MAKER IS YOUR HUSBAND; YAH of Armies is his name: and the Holy One of Yisra’el is your Redeemer; the Elohim of the whole earth shall he be called. For YAH has called you as a wife forsaken and grieved in spirit, EVEN A WIFE OF YOUTH, when she is cast off, says your Elohim. (Isaiah 54:5-6 RNEB)
Don’t we all have one father? Hasn’t one Elohim created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, PROFANING THE COVENANT OF OUR FATHERS? (Malachi 2:10 RNEB)

Our first love is the covenant, and for the faithful will always be the covenant which will never fail. We have to place our faith in Elohim, and the only way to do that is through the covenant.

Judah has dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Yisra’el and in Yerushalayim; for Judah has profaned the holiness of YAH which he loves, and HAS MARRIED THE DAUGHTER OF A FOREIGN ELOHIM. YAH will cut off, to the man who does this, him who wakes and him who answers, out of the tents of Jacob, and him who offers an offering to YAH of Armies. This again you do: you cover the altar of YAH with tears, with weeping, and with sighing, because he doesn’t regard the offering any more, neither receives it with good will at your hand. Yet you say, ’Why?’ Because YAH HAS BEEN WITNESS BETWEEN YOU AND THE WIFE OF YOUR YOUTH, against whom you have dealt treacherously, THOUGH SHE IS YOUR COMPANION, and THE WIFE OF YOUR COVENANT. (Malachi 2:11-14 RNEB)

The covenant that was made with the fathers was made at Sinai when Yisrael was joined to Elohim as a wife. YAH speaks to us many times using natural examples that we can better understand, rather than the spiritual which we may not. Yisrael has taken on a strange wife and forsaken the covenant with there first love, Elohim.

My son, pay attention to my wisdom. Turn your ear to my understanding: that you may maintain discretion, that your lips may preserve knowledge. FOR THE LIPS OF AN ADULTERESS DRIP HONEY. HER MOUTH IS SMOOTHER THAN OIL, BUT IN THE END SHE IS AS BITTER AS WORMWOOD, AND AS SHARP AS A TWO-EDGED SWORD. Her feet go down to death. Her steps lead straight to the grave. She gives no thought to the way of life. Her ways are crooked, and she doesn’t know it. (Proverbs 5:1-6 RNEB)

Simply put, her disposition and character changes often.

Now therefore, my sons, listen to me. Don’t DEPART FROM THE WORDS OF MY MOUTH. (Proverbs 5:7 RNEB)

The words that depart from the mouth of Elohim are called law.

REMOVE YOUR WAY FAR FROM HER. Don’t come near the door of her house, lest you give your honor to others, and your years to the cruel one; LEST STRANGERS FEAST ON YOUR WEALTH, AND YOUR LABORS ENRICH ANOTHER MAN’S HOUSE. (Proverbs 5:8-10 RNEB)

Remember what Yahshua said, “neither throw your pearls before the pigs, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” When the Most High blesses us with something we need to retain and use it for our edification. It’s also important we use discernment and discretion in sharing that information [Elohims words] with others.

You will groan at your latter end, when your flesh and your body are consumed, and say, “How I have hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof; neither have I obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor turned my ear to those who instructed me! I have come to the brink of utter ruin, in the midst of the gathered assembly.” (Proverbs 5:11-14 RNEB)

This has to do with pagan religion, whenever scripture refers to abominations and unclean actions and attributes he uses the analogy of a strange or foreign woman.

Spiritual fornication occurs when someone compromises the covenant for another theological position or doctrine. This is also called in scripture spiritual adultery.

Drink water out of your own cistern, running water out of your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, streams of water in the public squares? Let them be for yourself alone, not for strangers with you. Let your spring be blessed. REJOICE IN THE WIFE OF YOUR YOUTH. (Proverbs 5:15-18 RNEB)

The “wife of your youth” is referring to YAH, and we know him through his law.

A loving doe and a graceful deer– let her breasts satisfy you at all times. Be captivated always with her love. FOR WHY SHOULD YOU, MY SON, BE CAPTIVATED WITH AN ADULTERESS? WHY EMBRACE THE BOSOM OF ANOTHER? (Proverbs 5:19-20 RNEB)
Yochanan said to him, “Rabbi, we saw someone who doesn’t follow us casting out demons in your name; and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow us.” But Yahshua said, “Don’t forbid him, for there is no one who will do a mighty work in my name, and be able quickly to speak evil of me. FOR WHOEVER IS NOT AGAINST US IS ON OUR SIDE. (Mark 9:38-40 RNEB)

It doesn’t matter what assembly we attend as long as the plan of salvation and covenant are being taught. When we get involved in doctrines that are different, we are committing spiritual adultery.

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor HAS FULFILLED THE LAW. (Romans 13:8 RNEB)

We are saved by being obedient to the covenant with a sincere and pure heart. The covenant is not just keeping the dietary code and holy days, it’s also reconciling issues with a brother, providing for the homeless, fatherless, strangers, widows and much more. If we step outside any of the precepts the Most High has set forth for any other belief, we’re committing spiritual adultery. For example if we don’t help the stranger because they are not part of the anointed, we are following a doctrine that is not taught in the covenant, which is spiritual adultery. We have to keep it all, if we change any part of it we become spiritual harlots.

For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not give false testimony,” “You shall not covet,” and whatever other commandments there are, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love doesn’t harm a neighbor. Love therefore is the fulfillment of the law. (Romans 13:9-10 RNEB)

If we learn the law and don’t apply it we’re continuing to promote corruption. We are all born in corruption, however the word of Elohim has promised to purge us, and it’s important we all support each others efforts in the process to purge ourselves of anything that is unclean.

By this we know that we love the children of Elohim, WHEN WE LOVE ELOHIM AND KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. For this is the love of Elohim, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous. (1 John 5:2-3 RNEB)

This is the first love, we partake of it at our purification when we’re entering into a covenant with the Most High, agreeing to do everything that he said. We’re then part of the anointed and the household of Elohim. If at this point we partake of any other doctrine we’re committing fornication against the body of the anointed. Purification is supposed to be the outward expression of the love we have for the Most High, which means we are pledging our lives to being obedient to his law, for that’s the only way we can express our love for him.

But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, gathered themselves together. One of them, a Torah scholar, asked him a question, testing him. “Rabbi, which is the greatest commandment in the Torah?” Yahshua said to him, “’YOU SHALL LOVE YAH YOUR ELOHIM WITH ALL YOUR HEART, WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’ This is the first and great commandment. A second likewise is this, ’You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ The whole Torah and the Prophets depend on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:38-40 RNEB)
I heard something like the voice of a great multitude, and like the voice of many waters, and like the voice of mighty thunders, saying, “Halleluyah! For YAH our Elohim, the Almighty, reigns! Let us rejoice and be exceedingly glad, and let us give the glory to him. For the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his wife has made herself ready.” It was given to her that she would array herself in bright, pure, fine linen: FOR THE FINE LINEN IS THE RIGHTEOUS ACTS OF THE HOLY ONES. (Revelation 19:6-8 RNEB)
