Promise Of The Spirit

The purpose of this study is to establish an understanding of debatable statements made in the Pauline letters related to the assembly and the spirit. We will be answering the following questions among others.

  • What is the earnest of the spirit?
  • What does it mean to be holy?
  • What are the first fruits of the spirit?
  • What different ways is the term spirit used?
  • Why was the spirit given?
  • What is the gift of the spirit?
  • Do people still receive the holy spirit today?

Our objective is to understand the motivation behind statements made by leaders in the New Covenant assemblies and to see where they were relevant and to who they were directed. It’s important to realize that many of the things we read in the Pauline letters were directed to specific people and assemblies during the time period of the writings, and may not apply to us today.

For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from Elohim, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. (2 Corinthians 5:1 RNEB)

The house that Shaul is talking about is the spiritual body that we’re going to receive at our resurrection from the dead. Our earthly house is the mere mortal, feeble, corrupted body, we have today. We will receive an incorruptible body at the first resurrection if we endure to the end in righteousness.

For most certainly in this we groan, longing to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven; if so be that being clothed we will not be found naked. FOR INDEED WE WHO ARE IN THIS TENT DO GROAN, BEING BURDENED; NOT THAT WE DESIRE TO BE UNCLOTHED, BUT THAT WE DESIRE TO BE CLOTHED, THAT WHAT IS MORTAL MAY BE SWALLOWED UP BY LIFE. Now he who made us for this very thing is Elohim, WHO ALSO GAVE TO US THE EARNEST OF THE SPIRIT. (2 Corinthians 5:2-5 RNEB)

Earnest, Strongs #728, means money paid in advance as part payment to bind a contract or bargain, a pledge of something to come, a promise or an assurance. What and who Shaul is talking about and how does it apply?

Sha’ul, an emissary of the Anointed Yahshua through the will of Elohim, to the holy ones who are at Ephesus, and the faithful in the Anointed Yahshua: Grace to you and peace from Elohim our Father and Master Yahshua the Anointed. Blessed be the Elohim and Father of our Master Yahshua the Anointed, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in the Anointed; even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and without blemish before him in love; (Ephesians 1:1-4 RNEB)

The New testament does not define the word Holy, to understand what it means we’re going to have to go back to the first five books of the bible, which is where we find the doctrines that most of Christianity say were nailed to the cross. This would explain why over 60% of the world population does not know what holy means, and though the word is used throughout the New Testament many who claim to be teaching holiness are actually teaching doctrines that are unholy and lawless.

having predestined us for adoption as children through Yahshua the Anointed to himself, according to the good pleasure of his desire, to the praise of the glory of his grace, by which he freely bestowed favor on us in the Beloved, IN WHOM WE HAVE OUR REDEMPTION THROUGH HIS BLOOD, THE FORGIVENESS OF OUR TRESPASSES, ACCORDING TO THE RICHES OF HIS GRACE, (Ephesians 1:5-7 RNEB)

This promise of redemption is predicated on being Purified (baptized) in his holy name, if we’re not, this doesn’t apply.

which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he purposed in him to an administration of the fullness of the times, to sum up all things in the Anointed, the things in the heavens, and the things on the earth, in him; In whom also we were assigned an inheritance, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his will; to the end that we should be to the praise of his glory, we who had before hoped in the anointed: IN WHOM YOU ALSO, HAVING HEARD THE WORD OF THE TRUTH, THE GOOD NEWS OF YOUR SALVATION,–IN WHOM, HAVING ALSO BELIEVED, YOU WERE SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE, (Ephesians 1:8-13 RNEB)

Remember, the spirit was a pledge of something to come, a promise or assurance.

WHO IS THE EARNEST OF OUR INHERITANCE, to the redemption of Elohim’s own possession, to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:14 RNEB)

Let’s look at what Shaul is talking about, he made the same statement about the earnest or down payment in letters to both Corinth (in 60 AD) and Ephesus (in 64 AD).

For the creation waits with eager expectation for the children of Elohim to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of decay into the liberty of the glory of the children of Elohim. For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. NOT ONLY SO, BUT OURSELVES ALSO, WHO HAVE THE FIRST FRUITS OF THE SPIRIT, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in hope, but hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for that which he sees? But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience. In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered. He who searches the hearts knows what is on the Spirit’s mind, because he makes intercession for the holy ones according to Elohim. (Romans 8:19-27 RNEB)

What are the first fruits of the Spirit?

The answer is in verse 23 “Not only so, but ourselves also, who have the first fruits of the Spirit,” and then he says in verse 26 “In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groaning’s which can’t be uttered.” The term Spirit can be used one of three ways ecclesiastically:

  1. Ruach Hakodesh which is the Holy Spirit.
  2. Naphesh which is the breath of life.
  3. The word of Elohim which is also Spirit.

The first is an Angel, then the breath of life, and finally the word. Our objective is to analyze scripturally which aspect of the Spirit Sha’ul is talking to the assemblies about, which will help us understand to who, and when this was relevant.

Remember, he has given us the down payment of the Spirit, a pledge, promise or assurance.

But Sha’ul, still breathing threats and slaughter against the disciples of YAH, went to the High Priest, and asked for letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Yerushalayim. As he traveled, it happened that he got close to Damascus, and suddenly a light from the sky shone around him. He fell on the earth, and heard a voice saying to him, “Sha’ul, Sha’ul, why do you persecute me?” He said, “Who are you, Master?” and he said, “I am Yahshua, whom you are persecuting. But rise up, and enter into the city, and you will be told what you must do.” The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the sound, but seeing no one. Sha’ul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened, he saw no one. They led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus. He was without sight for three days, and neither ate nor drank. Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Chananyah. The Master said to him in a vision, “Chananyah!” He said, “Behold, it’s me, Master.” The Master said to him, “Arise, and go to the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judah for one named Sha’ul, a man of Tarsus. For behold, he is praying, and in a vision he has seen a man named Chananyah coming in, and laying his hands on him, that he might receive his sight.” But Chananyah answered, “Master, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he did to your holy ones at Yerushalayim. Here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name.” But the Master said to him, “Go your way, for he is my chosen vessel to bear my name before the nations and kings, and the children of Yisra’el. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for my name’s sake.” Chananyah departed, and entered into the house. Laying his hands on him, he said, “Brother Sha’ul, the Master, who appeared to you on the road by which you came, has sent me, that you may receive your sight, AND BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT.” (Acts 9:1-17 RNEB)

To be filled with the Holy Spirit, if applicable, means to be possessed by the Spirit, but it also means, as we will see in the scripture, to be directed or empowered by the spirit.

Immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he received his sight. He arose and was purified. He took food and was strengthened. Sha’ul stayed several days with the disciples who were at Damascus. Immediately in the synagogues he proclaimed the Anointed, that he is the Son of Elohim. All who heard him were amazed, and said, “Isn’t this he who in Yerushalayim made havoc of those who called on this name? And he had come here intending to bring them bound before the chief priests!” But Sha’ul increased more in strength, and confounded the Hebrews who lived at Damascus, proving that this is the Anointed. When many days were fulfilled, the Jews conspired together to kill him, but their plot became known to Sha’ul. They watched the gates both day and night that they might kill him, but his disciples took him by night, and let him down through the wall, lowering him in a basket. When Sha’ul had come to Yerushalayim, he tried to join himself to the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared to them how he had seen YAH in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how at Damascus he had preached boldly in the name of Yahshua. He was with them entering into Yerushalayim, preaching boldly in the name of YAH. He spoke and disputed against the Hellenists, but they were seeking to kill him. When the brothers knew it, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him off to Tarsus. So the assemblies throughout all Judah and the Galil and Samaria had peace, and were built up. THEY WERE MULTIPLIED, WALKING IN THE FEAR OF YAH AND IN THE COMFORT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Acts 9:18-31 RNEB)

Shaul was a disciple and an apostle, which is the Latin word for messenger . He was also hand-picked for his assignment by Elohim. There were many that could be considered apostles because they were messengers of the word, however there were only twelve leaders trained under Yahshua’s ministry, and Shaul was not counted among them.

Now I exhort you to cheer up, for there will be no loss of life among you, but only of the ship. For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the Elohim whose I am and whom I serve, saying, ’Don’t be afraid, Sha’ul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, Elohim has granted you all those who sail with you.’ Therefore, sirs, cheer up! For I believe Elohim, that it will be just as it has been spoken to me. (Acts 27:22-25 RNEB)

They were on a boat in a storm and everyone was afraid except Shaul who told them everything would be ok, because an angel stood by him and told him he would live to testify in Rome and the lives of all that were with him would be spared.

The Master said TO SHA’UL IN THE NIGHT BY A VISION, “DON’T BE AFRAID, but speak and don’t be silent; for I am with you, AND NO ONE WILL ATTACK YOU TO HARM YOU, FOR I HAVE MANY PEOPLE IN THIS CITY.” (Acts 18:9-10 RNEB)

If we had a vision similar to Shaul’s and heard a voice telling us not to be afraid, most likely we’re not going to worry about getting hurt. This is an example of being comforted by the Spirit, and one of the reasons the spirit is also called the comforter.

What’s actually occurring is an angel acting as an ambassador is telling Sha’ul not to worry about being hurt, because there is a job the Divine Order needed him for, and he would be protected until it’s completed.

The following night, the Master stood by him, and said, “Cheer up, Sha’ul, for as you have testified about me at Yerushalayim, so you must testify also at Rome.” (Acts 23:11 RNEB)
When it was determined that we should sail for Italy, they delivered Sha’ul and certain other prisoners to a centurion named Julius, of the Augustan band. (Acts 27:1 RNEB)
For there stood by me this night an angel, belonging to the Elohim whose I am and whom I serve, saying, Don’t be afraid, Sha’ul. You must stand before Caesar. Behold, Elohim has granted you all those who sail with you.’ (Acts 27:23-24 RNEB)

This was Shaul, the man who had gone from city to city persecuting believers until on the way to Damascus, he was blinded, became a disciple of Yahshua himself, then was appointed to be an apostle, and spoke the word and the name throughout Asia minor and in Yerushalayim. Shaul was the one that made the statement on the earnest of the Spirit, he also said the Spirit makes intercession for us, because we don’t always know what to pray for . So, was Shaul talking to us or the assemblies in Rome, Ephesus, and Corinth, furthermore do we see these things occurring in the books of the law and the prophets?

Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, AND BEGAN TO SPEAK WITH OTHER LANGUAGES, AS THE SPIRIT GAVE THEM THE ABILITY TO SPEAK. (Acts 2:1-4 RNEB)

Man does not know what to say, it is the Spirit that speaks and makes intercession. This is the reason Shaul says “if you pray in the Spirit …” there are a number of things we need to understand related to the Pauline writings, however this needs to be done through an exhaustive study of the New Testament, then it needs to be traced back through the Old Testament.

Ten days after Yahshua ascended into heaven one hundred and twenty people received the Spirit. This occurred on Pentecost, which was a time when all Hebrew males had to make a presentation in Yerushalayim, and they came from all over the known world. The apostles were given the opportunity to speak to them by the Spirit, they didn’t tell them about Moshe, Noah, or Shimshon, they were already aware of them as Hebrews. The Apostles spoke to them about a man, who walked on water, healed the sick, raised people from the dead, and he himself arose from the dead. These were things that had not occurred since Eliyahu and Elisha over eight hundred years earlier, which were historical events that they had only read about. Now there hearing about the prophesied Messiah who had come, and there convinced that it’s the truth because they are hearing it in their own language.

When this sound was heard, the multitude came together, and were bewildered, because everyone heard them speaking in his own language. They were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Behold, aren’t all these who speak from the Galil? How do we hear, everyone in our own native language? Parthians, Madai, Elamites, and people from Aram-Naharayim, Judah, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Hebrews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians: WE HEAR THEM SPEAKING IN OUR LANGUAGES THE MIGHTY WORKS OF ELOHIM!” (Acts 2:6-11 RNEB)

Remember it was the Spirit speaking, not man, they were just vessels being used by the Spirit, this is why Yahshua told them, “don’t be anxious how, or what you will say, for it will be given you…”(Matt 10:19)

Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37 RNEB)

They heard the apostles discourse and their hearts were pricked, so they are asking what they should do.

Peter said to them, “Repent, and be purified, every one of you, in the name of Yahshua the Anointed for the forgiveness of sins, and YOU WILL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. (Acts 2:38 RNEB)

What’s the gift of the Spirit they are going to receive?
What’s the earnest of the Spirit that was given?

It happened that, while Apollos was at Korint, Shaul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples. He said to them, “DID YOU RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT WHEN YOU BELIEVED?” They said to him, “No, WE HAVEN’T EVEN HEARD THAT THERE IS A HOLY SPIRIT.” He said, “Into what then were you purified?” They said, “Into Yochanan’s immersion.” (Acts 19:1-3 RNEB)

Sha’ul knew there was something wrong, because disciples were promised the Holy Spirit during this time period.

Sha’ul said, “Yochanan indeed purified with the immersion of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Yahshua.” When they heard this, they were purified in the name of Master Yahshua. WHEN SHA’UL HAD LAID HIS HANDS ON THEM, THE HOLY SPIRIT CAME ON THEM, and they spoke with other languages and prophesied. They were about twelve men in all. (Acts 19:4-7 RNEB)

Why would Sha’ul ask if they had received the Holy Spirit? Had any prophet in the days of old asked people if they received the Spirit?

The preceding events to the next verse are as follows, Simon goes to Cornelius who is an Italian, and brings him into the knowledge and awareness of the New Covenant. Going to another nation was something that wasn’t done at this time, especially among people that were considered unclean. Simon by the Spirit was told to go to the gentiles home, and he told Cornelius that it’s an unlawful thing for a Hebrew to go to one of another nation, but he was shown by the Spirit not to call any man common or unclean. Now let’s look at what the leaders of the new covenant assemblies said to Simon when he gets back to Yerushalayim.

Now the apostles and the brothers who were in Judah heard that the Gentiles had also received the word of Elohim. When Peter had come up to Yerushalayim, those who were of the circumcision contended with him, saying, “You went in to uncircumcised men, and ate with them!” But Peter began, and explained to them in order, saying, “I was in the city of Yafo praying, and in a trance I saw a vision: a certain container descending, like it was a great sheet let down from heaven by four corners. It came as far as me. When I had looked intently at it, I considered, and saw the four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, creeping things, and birds of the sky. I also heard a voice saying to me, ’Rise, Peter, kill and eat!’ But I said, ’Not so, Master, for nothing unholy or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.’ But a voice answered me the second time out of heaven, ’What Elohim has cleansed, don’t you call unclean.’ (Acts 11:1-9 RNEB)

He is explaining this to the other apostles and brethren that are in Judea, they are questioning him because he entered the house of a gentile.

This was done three times, and all were drawn up again into heaven. Behold, immediately three men stood before the house where I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me. The Spirit told me to go with them, without discriminating. These six brothers also accompanied me, and we entered into the man’s house. He told us how he had seen the angel standing in his house, and saying to him, ’Send to Yafo, and get Simon, whose surname is Peter, who will speak to you words by which you will be saved, you and all your house.’ As I began to speak, THE HOLY SPIRIT FELL ON THEM, EVEN AS ON US AT THE BEGINNING. I remembered the word of YAH, how he said, ’Yochanan indeed purified in water, but you will be purified in the Holy Spirit.’ IF THEN ELOHIM GAVE TO THEM THE SAME GIFT AS US, WHEN WE BELIEVED IN MASTER YAHSHUA THE ANOINTED, WHO WAS I, THAT I COULD WITHSTAND ELOHIM?” (Acts 11:10-17 RNEB)
When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified Elohim, saying, “Then Elohim has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life!” (Acts 11:18 RNEB)

All the Hebrews needed to hear was that they were baptized in the Spirit, this was a sign to them that YAH endorsed what happened.

The gift of the Holy Spirit and speaking in other languages was used to show the Hebrews that the gentiles had been engrafted in to the common wealth of Yisrael, and that there was no need for doubt. Since YAH was giving the gentiles the same spirit they received, it was considered a mark of approval. It also showed the gentiles were coheirs to eternal life and to the New Covenant body. The ability to speak in an unknown language was the sign that convinced them that the gentiles were accepted. Remember what it said in scripture, “they heard them speak with other tongues and magnify Elohim,” they knew they were magnifying Elohim because the Hebrews understood the language being spoken by the gentiles, however this was not a language the gentiles could normally speak.

It took something miraculous like this to happen to keep the other Hebrews from rejecting any association with Indo Euro-Asians (gentiles).

They therefore who were scattered abroad by the oppression that arose about Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to no one except to Hebrews only. But there were some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who, when they had come to Antioch, SPOKE TO THE HELLENISTS, preaching Master Yahshua. (Acts 11:19-20 RNEB)

Hellenist, also known as Grecians were Hebrews that adopted the Greek culture over their own culture. These were Hebrews that believed to make it in their society, they would have to engraft themselves as much as possible into the Greek culture and thought. This included mannerism, traditions, and their overall appearance and speech.

The hand of YAH was with them, and a great number believed and turned to YAH. (Acts 11:21 RNEB)
For we know that if the earthly house of our tent is dissolved, we have a building from Elohim, a house not made with hands, eternal, in the heavens. (2 Corinthians 5:1-5 RNEB)

When Shaul wrote “Who also gave to us the earnest of the Spirit,” Who was he talking to? Was he talking to us? Unless we’re two thousand years old, lived in Corinth or Ephesus, and were disciples working to spread the message, it’s unlikely he was thinking of us when this was written. When Shaul had written his letters they were to people in specific congregations, addressing specific questions about problems that arose in that assembly in that time. It was never Shaul’s intention when writing to the different assemblies that people two thousand years in the future would be using them as their chief doctrines . When reading the Pauline letters and the prophecies in scripture, it’s crucial that we put them in their proper context and time period. This does not mean we cannot learn from Sha’ul’s writings, it does mean however that everything he wrote cannot be applied to us today.

If Shaul or any of the apostles had known that their letters would be used to create new doctrines, or would be applied to other assemblies they would likely be appalled. We need to understand what was going on during this time period. There is something that was happening that had never occurred before on a massive scale. They had the task of bringing people under a new covenant, they were telling people that there is a new process to salvation, and it is no longer driven by just keeping the commandments, practicing the law, and offering up sacrifices. Now they needed to keep the commandments, practice the law, and receive Yahshua the anointed by faith as their propitiation offering. This is the reason we find Yahshua’s name mentioned in all the epistles of the apostles, because he’s the driving force and essential foundation of the New Covenant. They were taking this message to Hebrews who had been sacrificing animals to atone for their sins for over 1600 years. This was a different time, and there were things occurring specifically to prove to the Hebrews what they were being told was true.

Now concerning spiritual things, brothers, I don’t want you to be ignorant. You know that when you were heathen, you were led away to those mute idols, however you might be led. Therefore I make known to you that no man speaking by Elohim’s Spirit says, “Yahshua is accursed.” No one can say, “Yahshua is Master,” but by the Holy Spirit. Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same spirit. There are various kinds of service, and the same master. There are various kinds of workings, BUT THE SAME ELOHIM, WHO WORKS ALL THINGS IN ALL. BUT TO EACH ONE IS GIVEN THE MANIFESTATION OF THE SPIRIT FOR THE PROFIT OF ALL. (1 Corinthians 12:1-7 RNEB)

Man does nothing ecclesiastically in our terrestrial bodies but follow instructions, it’s Elohim who works all things in all.

The Spirit is given to benefit all, not just an individual, the spirit was not and will never be assigned to a person just to hang out or for their personal gain. The Spirit has a mandate, and they choose righteous vessels to accomplish it and then leave when the task is completed.

For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the same Spirit; and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discerning of spirits; to another different kinds of languages; and to another the interpretation of languages. But the one and the same Spirit works all of these, DISTRIBUTING TO EACH ONE SEPARATELY AS HE DESIRES. (1 Corinthians 12:8-11 RNEB)

The gifts are given and divided “as he wills.” In Christianity, Islam, and other religions they all claim to have spiritual gifts, but why would YAH give lawless people gifts? Let’s take this one step further, how does someone not walking righteously according to scriptural precepts and manifesting gifts do them? We know Moshe had the spirit, walked righteously, and performed great tasks by the power of Elohim. However, by what power did Pharaohs magicians turn there rods into serpents? YAH is not the only one that gives gifts!

Now you are the body of the Anointed, and members individually. Elohim has set some in the assembly: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracle workers, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, and various kinds of languages. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all miracle workers? Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with various languages? Do all interpret? But earnestly desire the best gifts. Moreover, I show a most excellent way to you. (1 Corinthians 12:27-31 RNEB)

A common question is, do we receive the gifts of the Spirit today? The so called gift of speaking in tongues, healing, prophecy, and others we see today are different ones than what we see described in the scripture. So, they cannot be the manifestation of the holy spirit. For example, the gift of tongues we just read about is the ability for an individual to speak in an unknown language, however it’s a known language to the hearer. This is something that occurs in an instant, and can be spoken fluently. It also must serve a purpose that fulfills a mandate set by YAH, not man’s pride or foolish desires.

doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will be done away with. Where there are various languages, they will cease. Where there is knowledge, it will be done away with. (1 Corinthians 13:6-8 RNEB)

It says prophecies will be done away with, but when, who was the last profit? It was Yochanan (John), he was responsible for writing the book of Revelation. There has not been a prophet of Elohim since.

The purpose of the gifts was to enlighten, convince, and convict the people who were under the old covenant to show them the new covenant had come into fulfillment, and through it, they would have the opportunity to receive eternal life. This was necessary to remove people from sixteen hundred years of sacrificing and convince them it was replaced by having faith in the man Yahshua the Anointed, and by being purified in his name. This is why we see the manifestation of the Spirit during this period, the spiritual works being done were the proof that the apostles were sent by Elohim, just as Moshe was given signs to show the children of Yisrael when he was sent to lead them out of Egypt.

For we know in part, and we prophesy in part; BUT WHEN THAT WHICH IS COMPLETE HAS COME, THEN THAT WHICH IS PARTIAL WILL BE DONE AWAY WITH. (1 Corinthians 13:9-10 RNEB)

That which is complete is knowledge, and the knowledge and truth of Yahshua the Anointed, as well as the laws and precepts of YAH are available for anyone who is truly seeking after righteousness. The knowledge of the temples destruction which occurred in 70 AD and was prophesied by Yahshua and has become part of history. The only remaining sacrifice for sin now is the anointed.

But to each one of us was the grace given according to the measure of the gift of the Anointed. Therefore he says, “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVITY CAPTIVE, AND GAVE GIFTS TO MEN.” (Ephesians 4:7-8 RNEB)

For what reason did he give gifts to men? Yahshua sent the apostles into Yerushalayim, Judea, Samaria, and the utter most parts of the world. He said he would not leave them comfortless, so the Father gave them the Holy Spirit, which would dwell in apostles, all those sent in Yahshua’s time to spread the New Covenant message.

Now this, “He ascended,” what is it but that he also first descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens, that he might fill all things. He GAVE SOME to be apostles; AND SOME, prophets; AND SOME, evangelists; AND SOME, shepherds and teachers; (Ephesians 4:9-11 RNEB)

We were given shepherds, or overseers for the assemblies, each with their own unique gifts, but notice it does not say he ever gave us priests.

FOR THE EQUIPPING OF THE HOLY ONES, TO THE WORK OF SERVING, TO THE BUILDING UP OF THE BODY OF THE ANOINTED; until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of Elohim, to a full grown man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of the Anointed; (Ephesians 4:12-13 RNEB)

What was the purpose of leading captivity, captive, and giving gifts to men? It was for the perfecting of the righteous, in other words so that those who are righteous may come into the fulfillment of the truth for the work of the ministry.

When someone says “I have the holy spirit,” we should ask them what office they hold in their congregation that they would need the divine direction of the Spirit, an Angel. The ones that we see in scripture who received the spirit were, for a lack of a better phrase “in the trenches,” they needed the support, direction, and help, because they didn’t even know what to pray for, but the spirit knew. This is the reason Shaul makes these statements, we need to look at who he’s talking to. There is just no way we can open the New Testament and say this applies to us, unless we’re 2000 years old and were a part of the congregation of Ephesus or Corinth. He was specifically talking about events and things that took place during his time, to build up the New Covenant assemblies. Remember all of Sha’ul’s writing are letters to specific assemblies that were prompted by specific questions and events taking place during his time. We can learn from his writings, however they were never written to replace the sound doctrine that comes from studying the old testament. Shaul used his extensive knowledge of the Torah and the books of the prophets to answer questions and teach for the perfecting of the saints, his writings were never intended to be taken out of their old testament context and used to create new doctrine .

We need to understand there are three ways the Hebrew word Ruach, which is commonly known as Spirit can be translated. It can refer to the Holy Spirit, the Breath of life, and the word of Elohim. So, the Spirit that is supposed to dwell in us and makes us the temple of truth is the word of Elohim. Shaul in what we just read is referring to the Holy Spirit as a divine entity that would use selected individuals as vessels to fulfill a mandate given to them by YAH . In Sha’ul’s time this was necessary because man did not know what to say. If we look at the scripture we find it’s always the Spirit that was speaking through man, he was never speaking alone. It was also necessary during this time to be able to provide proof that their teaching was from Elohim. The people they were approaching had been performing animal sacrifices for 1600 years and were now being told to stop, and put their faith in Yahshua the anointed. For a better understanding of the new covenant message read the studies on the New Covenant.

Some may be wondering if the Holy Spirit dwells in us today. If the Spirit has been given a charge from YAH, he will choose a righteous vessel or vessels to accomplish what needs to be said or done and then leave. We don’t see this happening as prevalent today as it did two thousand years ago. We do however see the spirit of the false prophet working through many of today’s religious leaders, which should act as a warning about the time we’re living in. The reason we know these are false prophets performing signs and wonders today is the heavenly Father would never use a lawless and unclean vessel to perform works of holiness. The common teachings today are often contradictory to what is taught in the scripture.

The children of Yisra’el again did that which was evil in the sight of YAH; and YAH delivered them into the hand of the Pelishtim forty years. There was a certain man of Tzor`ah, of the family of the Dani, whose name was Manoach; and his wife was barren, and didn’t bear. The angel of YAH appeared to the woman, and said to her, See now, you are barren, and don’t bear; but you shall conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore please beware and drink no wine nor strong drink, and don’t eat any unclean thing: for, behold, you shall conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head; for the child shall be a Nazir to Elohim from the womb: and he shall begin to save Yisra’el out of the hand of the Pelishtim. (Judges 13:1-5 RNEB)
The Spirit of YAH began to move him in Machane-Dan, between Tzor`ah and Eshta’ol. (Judges 13:25 RNEB)

It was the Spirit that moved him and did the work, just as it was the Spirit that gave utterance to the disciples of Yahshua.

Then went Shimshon down, and his father and his mother, to Timnah, and came to the vineyards of Timnah: and behold, a young lion roared against him. THE SPIRIT OF YAH CAME MIGHTILY ON HIM, and he tore him as he would have torn a kid; and he had nothing in his hand: but he didn’t tell his father or his mother what he had done. He went down, and talked with the woman, and she pleased Shimshon well. (Judges 14:5-7 RNEB)

It was the spirit that tore the lion, not Shimshon, however Shimshon received the credit, the story is about him not the Spirit.

The gift given to Shimshon was his strength, and he received this gift because he was a judge called to deliver Yisrael out of the hands of the Pelishtim. The gifts are always for the edification of the body, and for the glory, will, and work of Elohim.

Then Shemu’el took the vial of oil, and poured it on his head, and kissed him, and said, Isn’t it that YAH has anointed you to be prince over his inheritance? When you are departed from me today, then you shall find two men by Rachel’s tomb, in the border of Binyamin at Tzeltzach; and they will tell you, The donkeys which you went to seek are found; and behold, your father has left off caring for the donkeys, and is anxious for you, saying, What shall I do for my son? (1 Samuel 10:1-2 RNEB)
and they will greet you, and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall receive of their hand. After that you shall come to the hill of Elohim, where is the garrison of the Pelishtim: and it shall happen, when you are come there to the city, that you shall meet a band of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tambourine, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they will be prophesying: AND THE SPIRIT OF YAH WILL COME MIGHTILY ON YOU, AND YOU SHALL PROPHESY WITH THEM, AND SHALL BE TURNED INTO ANOTHER MAN. (1 Samuel 10:4-6 RNEB)

King Shaul received the gift of the Spirit for the purpose of ruling the nation of Yisrael in a theocratic manner. He was given the gift of prophecy as evidence that the Spirit of Elohim was with him, and he was truly the anointed king.

It was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Shemu’el, Elohim gave him another heart: and all those signs happened that day. When they came there to the hill, behold, a band of prophets met him; AND THE SPIRIT OF ELOHIM CAME MIGHTILY ON HIM, AND HE PROPHESIED AMONG THEM. It happened, when all who knew him before saw that, behold, he prophesied with the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come to the son of Kish? Is Sha’ul also among the prophets? (1 Samuel 10:9-11 RNEB)

King Shaul prophesied after the Spirit came on him, man cannot do anything alone when it comes to Elohim’s ecclesiastical mandates. A natural man is weak and feeble so YAH through his Divine Order chose righteous men to be used as vessels the spirit would work through to fulfill his will.

Shlomo loved YAH, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places. The king went to Giv`on to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Shlomo offer on that altar. In Giv`on YAH appeared to Shlomo in a dream by night; and Elohim said, Ask what I shall give you. Shlomo said, You have shown to your servant David my father great loving kindness, according as he walked before you in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with you; and you have kept for him this great loving kindness, that you have given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. Now, YAH my Elohim, you have made your servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child; I don’t know how to go out or come in. Your servant is in the midst of your people which you have chosen, a great people, that can’t be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding heart to judge your people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this your great people? The speech pleased YAH, that Shlomo had asked this thing. Elohim said to him, Because you have asked this thing, and have not asked for yourself long life, neither have asked riches for yourself, nor have asked the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice; behold, I have done according to your word: behold, I have given you a wise and an understanding heart; so that there has been none like you before you, neither after you shall any arise like you. I have also given you that which you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like you, all your days. If you will walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as your father David did walk, then I will lengthen your days. Shlomo awoke; and behold, it was a dream: and he came to Yerushalayim, and stood before the ark of the covenant of YAH, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants. (1 Kings 3:3-15 RNEB)

Shlomo’s gift was wisdom, let’s look at an example:

Then there came two women who were prostitutes, to the king, and stood before him. The one woman said, Oh, my master, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. It happened the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. This woman’s child died in the night, because she lay on it. She arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. When I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I bore. The other woman said, No; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son. This said, No; but the dead is your son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king. Then said the king, The one says, This is my son who lives, and your son is the dead: and the other says, No; but your son is the dead, and my son is the living. The king said, Get me a sword. They brought a sword before the king. The king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. Then spoke the woman whose the living child was to the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, Oh, my master, give her the living child, and in no way kill it. But the other said, It shall be neither mine nor yours; divide it. (1 Kings 3:16-26 RNEB)

The wisdom Shlomo exhibited was being divinely inspired through the Spirit, he was not wise by his own right. YAH gave him these gifts, so he could rule, advise, and redeem a nation of people. The gifts in the New Testament are no different from the Old Testament, they were given for the very same reason.

Eliyahu the Tishbi, who was of the foreigners of Gil`ad, said to Ach’av, As YAH, the Elohim of Yisra’el, lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. (1 Kings 17:1 RNEB)

Eliyahu prophesied about a drought, so his gift was prophecy.

It happened after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him. She said to Eliyahu, What have I to do with you, you man of Elohim? You have come to me to bring my sin to memory, and to kill my son! He said to her, Give me your son. He took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into the chamber, where he abode, and laid him on his own bed. He cried to YAH, and said, YAH my Elohim, have you also brought evil on the widow with whom I sojourn, by killing her son? He stretched himself on the child three times, and cried to YAH, and said, YAH my Elohim, please let this child’s soul come into him again. YAH listened to the voice of Eliyahu; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. Eliyahu took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Eliyahu said, Behold, your son lives. The woman said to Eliyahu, Now I know that you are a man of Elohim, and that the word of YAH in your mouth is truth. (1 Kings 17:17-24 RNEB)

The woman was edified because he raised the dead and established that he was a prophet of Elohim. This sign and wonder was done by the Spirit to establish the man of Elohim before the people.

There were only two people in the old testament that raised the dead and healed the sick, Eliyahu and Elisha. The gift of the Spirit is not given to everyone, and not everyone can raise the dead or heal the sick, even if they can muster enough faith. These signs were being done by the Spirit to serve a particular purpose and fulfill YAH’s will. The Holy Spirit only exhibited signs and wonders and different gifts when they were needed to fulfill a command of YAH. They did it by choosing righteous individuals as vessels that they would come upon until the specific mandate was completed.

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amotz, which he saw concerning Judah and Yerushalayim, in the days of `Uzziyah, Yotam, Achaz, and Chizkiyahu, kings of Judah. Hear, heavens, and listen, earth; for YAH has spoken: I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. (Isaiah 1:1-2 RNEB)

Isaiah’s gift was prophecy.

The words of Yirmeyahu the son of Chilkiyah, of the priests who were in `Anatot in the land of Binyamin: to whom the word of YAH came in the days of Yoshiyahu the son of Amon, king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign. (Jeremiah 1:1-2 RNEB)
Now the word of YAH came to me, saying, Before I formed you in the belly I knew you, and before you came forth out of the womb I sanctified you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations. Then said I, Ah, Master YAH! behold, I don’t know how to speak; for I am a child. But YAH said to me, Don’t say, I am a child; FOR TO WHOEVER I SHALL SEND YOU, YOU SHALL GO, AND WHATEVER I SHALL COMMAND YOU, YOU SHALL SPEAK. (Jeremiah 1:4-7 RNEB)

They’re still a number of different prophets that we can use as examples, however we have established that all these prophets said “thus saith YAH.” In other words the Spirit came to select men and told them what to say, Elohim was speaking through them.

Now in these days, prophets came down from Yerushalayim to Antioch. One of them named Agav stood up, and indicated by the Spirit that there should be a great famine all over the world, which also happened in the days of Claudius. As any of the disciples had plenty, each determined to send relief to the brothers who lived in Judah; which they also did, sending it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Sha’ul. (Acts 11:27-30 RNEB)

Agav was the first to be called a prophet by the New Covenant assembly, he predicted a famine which occurred during the reign of Claudius in 41-54 AD. Josephus the first century historian described such a famine occurring in Judea about 46 AD.

One of the reasons YAH established prophets in the New Covenant assembly was to warn people about coming recompense and judgment. Agav who is in the New Covenant period warned the people, so they knew of the upcoming famine, and were able to prepare for it. We have a similar occurrence in the old testament with Yoseph when he interpreted the dream of Pharaoh about the coming famine. This was also a prophecy and as a result the people prepared enabling many to survive through it.

There must be a need for YAH to endorse a Holy Spirit to choose a righteous vessel to give direction, when he does it’s not to influence change strictly for the benefit of an individual, but to affect change in the body of the anointed, those already walking in or toward righteousness. Those who claim to have the Holy Spirit and say they no longer drink or curse as evidence of it are doing it in ignorance. The Spirit is never sent to anyone to change their mind, and that’s all stopping bad habits is, a change of desire. The Spirit will only use an individual to perform a charge given by the Most High, which requires a righteous earthly vessel, to do an ecclesiastical work which benefits the whole body.

When we had finished the voyage from Tzor, we arrived at Ptolemais. We greeted the brothers, and stayed with them one day. On the next day, we, who were Sha’ul’s companions, departed, and came to Caesarea. We entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the seven, and stayed with him. (Acts 21:7-8 RNEB)

We know that Philip had the Spirit with him, and it was used to grow the body of the Anointed, we have an example in Acts 8:26, the Spirit told Philip to go speak to a Hebrew from Ethiopia because he was reading the scroll of Isaiah and didn’t understand it. When Philip explained it, the Hebrew Ethiopian said what’s keeping me from being purified, he received the testimony of Yahshua and was then baptized. The Spirit was with Philip to perform a charge set forth by YAH, not for Philips personal benefit.

Now this man had four virgin daughters who prophesied. As we stayed there some days, a certain prophet named Agav came down from Judah. Coming to us, and taking Sha’ul’s belt, he bound his own feet and hands, and said, “THUS SAYS THE HOLY SPIRIT: ’SO WILL THE HEBREWS AT YERUSHALAYIM BIND THE MAN WHO OWNS THIS BELT, AND WILL DELIVER HIM INTO THE HANDS OF THE GENTILES.’” (Acts 21:9-11 RNEB)

Thus says the Holy Spirit – This was most likely changed by the redactors, it should be “thus says YAH” to align properly with the rest of scripture.

This is another example of prophecy being used, in this instant to warn Sha’ul that he would be taken prisoner and handed to the Indo-Euro-Asians. In all are examples new covenant prophets work under the same principles and guidelines as the old covenant prophets.

Yahshua, when he was purified, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. HE SAW THE SPIRIT OF ELOHIM DESCENDING AS A DOVE, AND COMING ON HIM. (Matthew 3:16 RNEB)
Yahshua, FULL OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, returned from the Yarden, AND WAS LED BY THE SPIRIT INTO THE WILDERNESS (Luke 4:1 RNEB)

The Spirit led him into the wilderness, so it was planned and mandated by YAH that he be tested and tried before he started his ministry.

He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the day of Sabbath, and stood up to read. The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of YAH is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of YAH.” He closed the book, gave it back to the shammash, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. (Luke 4:16-20 RNEB)

After Yahshua received the Spirit, he was different, he spoke with boldness and authority, his character changed. This is because Yahshua wasn’t doing this of his own accord, it was the Spirit dwelling in him. Yahshua was just an obedient vessel allowing the Spirit to work through him, just as the spirit worked in the Old Testament prophets.

Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? The words that I tell you, I speak not from myself; BUT THE FATHER WHO LIVES IN ME DOES HIS WORKS. (John 14:10 RNEB)

After Yahshua received the Spirit, he no longer did anything of his own accord.

It happened, as we were going to prayer, that a certain girl having a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much gain by fortune telling. Following Sha’ul and us, she cried out, “These men are servants of the El `Elyon, who proclaim to us the way of salvation!” She was doing this for many days. But Sha’ul, becoming greatly annoyed, TURNED AND SAID TO THE SPIRIT, “I charge you in the name of Yahshua the Anointed to come out of her!” It came out that very hour. But when her masters saw that the hope of their gain was gone, they seized Sha’ul and Sila, and dragged them into the marketplace before the rulers. (Acts 16:16-19 RNEB)

There is a difference between fortune telling and those who prophesied, prophecy comes from those in the Divine Order, commanded, and commissioned by YAH, and fortune telling is what we find in today’s church, even though they call it prophecy.

Conclusion

When reading the bible a student has to consider who the author was, who he was writing to, why he was writing to them, and what the application and purpose was. The promise of the Spirit was given as a seal to those who were the disciples and servants of YAH during the building of the New Covenant assemblies. So, what we’re talking about are gifts these people received during the first thirty years of the assembly for the establishment of the New Covenant order that YAH was bringing to the earth . These are the power gifts done by the will of angels who provided them to select individuals based on their natural abilities, disciplines, maturity, and talent for the edification of the body.

As we review Shaul’s letters to the assembly at Corinth, we see the earnest of the spirit was not new in scripture, for example King Shaul and King Shlomo had the earnest of the Spirit to rule the nation. We also have examples of wisdom and understanding being given through the earnest of the Spirit to select individuals to build the first tabernacle, and there are many other examples that could be cited. In other words, Shaul was writing to disciples, workers within the assembly at Corinth and Ephesus who needed the Spirit for the edification of the body.

The earnest or promise of the Spirit is what the disciples and workers of YAH had received as a seal of approval, the endorsement of the Spirit, and it was validated and substantiated by its manifestations, such as healing and diverse languages. Shaul was also saying that if YAH endorsed a Holy entity to direct or dwell in a person for a specific mandate than they have been seen as righteous in his eyes . However, since we’re free willed beings, this does not mean everyone that had the Spirit in scripture remained righteous.
