Yom Kippur

The purpose of this study is to review the Sabbaths which YAH has given as a sign between him and his people. We will specifically be focusing on the day of Atonement, Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the year. Our objective be to answer the following questions:

  • What are YAH’s Sabbaths?
  • Why were the Sabbaths given?
  • Why was Yom Kippur given?
  • What does the Yom Kippur represent today?
  • How do we keep Yom Kippur?
  • What is Yahshua’s role in Yom Kippur?

When talking about Sabbaths many think of only the weekly Sabbath which falls on the 7th day, Saturday, however the nations observe this day on Sunday, which is a civil Sabbath, a day set by the government and originally mandated in 321 CE by emperor Constantine.

YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak also to the children of Yisra’el, saying, ’Most certainly you shall keep my Sabbaths: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that you may know that I am YAH who sanctifies you. (Exodus 31:12-13 RNEB)

The Sabbaths didn’t just include the weekly adherence, but also others, which were the first and last day of Unleavened bread, the first and last day of Tabernacles, Pentecost, Trumpets, Atonement, and New Moons.

Therefore the children of Yisra’el shall keep the Sabbath, to OBSERVE THE SABBATH THROUGHOUT THEIR GENERATIONS, FOR A PERPETUAL COVENANT. It is a sign between me and the children of Yisra’el forever; for in six days YAH made heaven and earth, and ON THE SEVENTH DAY HE RESTED, and was refreshed.’” (Exodus 31:16-17 RNEB)

The Sabbath is an eternal sign or mark between YAH and those who have entered into his covenant.

YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and tell them, ’The set feasts of YAH, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my set feasts. (Leviticus 23:1-2 RNEB)

These days were established as a time to gather as well as to read and understand the scriptures for our spiritual wellness.

“’Six days shall work be done: but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no manner of work. It is a Sabbath to YAH in all your dwellings. (Leviticus 23:3 RNEB)
YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “However ON THE TENTH DAY OF THIS SEVENTH MONTH IS YOM KIPPUR: IT SHALL BE A HOLY CONVOCATION TO YOU, and you shall afflict yourselves; and you shall offer an offering made by fire to YAH. You shall do no manner of work in that same day; for it is Yom Kippur, to make atonement for you before YAH your Elohim. For whoever it is who shall not deny himself in that same day; shall be cut off from his people. Whoever it is who does any manner of work in that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. You shall do no manner of work: it is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for you, and you shall deny yourselves. IN THE NINTH DAY OF THE MONTH AT EVENING, FROM EVENING TO EVENING, YOU SHALL KEEP YOUR SABBATH.” (Leviticus 23:26-32 RNEB)

This is the commandment to keep the day of atonement with its time and instructions for adherence. This holy day is also called a Sabbath and all YAH’s Sabbaths are a sign between him and his people, it’s what marks us. YAH did not give us Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Valentines day, or Sunday worship. All these holidays, a termed derived from Holy Days came from the precepts and dictates of men. The ones we adhere to reveal whether we worship YAH or man.

He said to Moshe, “Come up to YAH, you, and Aharon, Nadav, and Avihu, and seventy of the elders of Yisra’el; and worship from a distance. Moshe alone shall come near to YAH, but they shall not come near, neither shall the people go up with him.” MOSHE CAME AND TOLD THE PEOPLE ALL THE WORDS OF YAH, AND ALL THE ORDINANCES; AND ALL THE PEOPLE ANSWERED WITH ONE VOICE, AND SAID, “ALL THE WORDS WHICH YAH HAS SPOKEN WILL WE DO.” (Exodus 24:1-3 RNEB)

Moshe told the people all the ordinances given from YAH, this was not just the ten commandments, there were over 450 ordinances, and the people said, “All the words which YAH has spoken, we will do.”

Moshe wrote all the words of YAH, and rose up early in the morning, and built an altar under the mountain, and twelve pillars for the twelve tribes of Yisra’el. He sent young men of the children of Yisra’el, who offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of oxen to YAH. MOSHE TOOK HALF OF THE BLOOD AND PUT IT IN BASINS, AND HALF OF THE BLOOD HE SPRINKLED ON THE ALTAR. HE TOOK THE BOOK OF THE COVENANT AND READ IT IN THE HEARING OF THE PEOPLE, AND THEY SAID, “ALL THAT YAH HAS SPOKEN WILL WE DO, AND BE OBEDIENT.” Moshe took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, “LOOK, THIS IS THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT, WHICH YAH HAS MADE WITH YOU CONCERNING ALL THESE WORDS.” (Exodus 24:4-8 RNEB)

Many try to separate the feasts which are also Sabbath days from the ten commandments. They say the ten commandments were given, then later the feast days, however this is not true.

YAH said to Moshe, “Chisel two stone tablets like the first: and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. (Exodus 34:1 RNEB)
You shall make no cast idols for yourselves. “You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib; for in the month Abib you came out from Egypt. (Exodus 34:17-18 RNEB)
“Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest: in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. You shall observe the feast of weeks with the first fruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of ingatherings at the year’s end. THREE TIMES IN THE YEAR ALL YOUR MALES SHALL APPEAR BEFORE YAH ELOHIM, THE ELOHIM OF YISRA’EL. (Exodus 34:21-23 RNEB)

Three times men in Yisrael had to come together and present themselves before Elohim for the mandatory feast days. They are the Feast of Unleavened bread (1st and 7th day), Feast of Pentecost, and Feast of Tabernacles (1st and 8th day), so there are three holy days and five times they had to come together. These came down from Mount Sinai where Moshe received the 10 commandments and the instructions, this is what was given to the sons of Yisrael, a mixed multitude of people that came out of Egypt. Remember what scripture says, man was not made for the Sabbath but the Sabbath for man, these days were given to us as a day of rest, a holy convocation, and an opportunity to show thanks and appreciation to YAH.

In Exodus 24 Moshe received over 450 commandments from Elohim, who knows that Yisrael and all mankind are not going to be able to observe them perfectly, so he had to do something to propitiate and cover their iniquity. As a result he gave them the sacrificial ordinances, which were given after the covenant was filled, this is the reason Moshe is now getting ready to build the tabernacle.

YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak to the children of Yisra’el, that they take an offering for me. From everyone whose heart makes him willing you shall take my offering. This is the offering which you shall take from them: gold, silver, brass, blue, purple, scarlet, fine linen, goats’ hair, rams’ skins dyed red, sea cow hides, shittim wood, oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense, shoham stones, and stones to be set for the efod and for the breastplate. Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. (Exodus 25:1-8 RNEB)
YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak to Aharon, and to his sons, and to all the children of Yisra’el, and say to them: ’This is the thing which YAH has commanded, Whatever man there is of the house of Yisra’el, who kills an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or who kills it outside the camp, and hasn’t brought it to the door of the Tent of Meeting, to offer it as an offering to YAH before the tabernacle of YAH: blood shall be imputed to that man. He has shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people. This is to the end that the children of Yisra’el may bring their sacrifices, which they sacrifice in the open field, that they may bring them to YAH, to the door of the Tent of Meeting, to the Priest, and sacrifice them for sacrifices of peace offerings to YAH. The Priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of YAH at the door of the Tent of Meeting, and burn the fat for a sweet savor to YAH. They shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat idols, after which they play the prostitute. THIS SHALL BE A STATUTE FOREVER TO THEM THROUGHOUT THEIR GENERATIONS.’ (Leviticus 17:1-7 RNEB)

The assembly is still whoring today, nowhere in the scripture can we find Christmas, Easter, Holloween, or any of the other traditional days of worship, these are pagan holidays serving pagan gods, and whenever we start participating in anything that gives glory to a person, place, or thing other than the Almighty Elohim, we our committing idolatry.

Not everyone who says to me, ‘Master, Master,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 7:21 RNEB)

The will or desire of the Father is found in the Torah, the first five books of the bible.

Many will tell me in that day, ‘Master, Master, didn’t we prophesy in your name, in your name cast out demons, and in your name do many mighty works?’ (Matthew 7:22 RNEB)

Who is this talking about? With the greatest respect, we have to exempt Muslims, Buddhist, Hindu’s, Atheist, Confucianism, and orthodox Judaism, because they don’t accept Yahshua, so that only leaves us with two ecclesiastical institutions that profess Yahshua as the propitiation for their sins, Christians and Messianic Hebrew assemblies.

Then I will tell them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you who work lawlessness.’ (Matthew 7:23 RNEB)

Yahshua is going to say in the last day, during second advent judgment, depart from me, you who don’t practice the law.

They shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to the goat idols, after which they play the prostitute. This shall be a statute forever to them throughout their generations.’ “You shall say to them, ’Any man there is of the house of Yisra’el, or of the strangers who live as foreigners among them, who offers a burnt offering or sacrifice, and doesn’t bring it to the door of the Tent of Meeting, to sacrifice it to YAH; that man shall be cut off from his people. “’ANY MAN OF THE HOUSE OF YISRA’EL, OR OF THE STRANGERS WHO LIVE AS FOREIGNERS AMONG THEM, WHO EATS ANY KIND OF BLOOD, I WILL SET MY FACE AGAINST THAT SOUL WHO EATS BLOOD, AND WILL CUT HIM OFF FROM AMONG HIS PEOPLE. (Leviticus 17:7-10 RNEB)
  • Are you keeping the dietary code that Elohim established?
  • Did you know that you can’t eat blood, which also means your steaks and burgers have to be cooked well?

This is what marks and separates us, there are also diseases carried in the blood. The dietary code not only separates us, but was also given to distinguish the animals that would provide proper nourishment from the one that don’t.

For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls: FOR IT IS THE BLOOD THAT MAKES ATONEMENT BY REASON OF THE LIFE. (Leviticus 17:11 RNEB)
Aharon shall present the goat on which the lot fell for YAH, and offer him for a sin offering. But the goat, on which the lot fell for the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before YAH, to make atonement for him, to send him away for the scapegoat into the wilderness. (Leviticus 16:9-10 RNEB)
“Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat: (Leviticus 16:15 RNEB)

The sin offering was for the people, it was the blood of an animal that cleansed them from their lawlessness [sin]. Remember YAH said the life is in the blood, and the penalty for sin is death, so YAH is allowing the life of an animal to be substituted as the payment for the peoples lawlessness. This was the process under the sacrificial system, as we transition into the new covenant we will see that the anointed fulfilled the sacrificial ordinances, and not the original covenant [Torah, Law] given to Yisrael.

and he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Yisra’el, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so he shall do for the Tent of Meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleanness. (Leviticus 16:16 RNEB)
Aharon shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Yisra’el, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them on the head of the goat, and shall send him away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. The goat shall carry all their iniquities on himself to a solitary land, and he shall let the goat go in the wilderness. (Leviticus 16:21-22 RNEB)

We’re now introducing the Anointed.

In fact, it was our diseases he bore, our pains from which he suffered; yet we regarded him as punished, stricken and afflicted by Elohim. But he was wounded because of our crimes, crushed because of our sins; the disciplining that makes us whole fell on him, and by his bruises [Or: and in fellowship with him] we are healed. We all, like sheep, went astray; we turned, each one, to his own way; YET YAH LAID ON HIM THE LAWLESSNESS OF ALL OF US. (Isaiah 53:4-6 CJB)

YAH laid the iniquity of us all on the anointed, which is the same thing that had been originally laid on the scapegoat.

Though mistreated, he was submissive — he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to be slaughtered, like a sheep silent before its shearers, he did not open his mouth. After forcible arrest and sentencing, he was taken away; and none of his generation protested his being cut off from the land of the living for the crimes of my people, who deserved the punishment themselves. (Isaiah 53:7-8 CJB)

For the transgressions of the sons of Yisrael the goat was originally stricken and now the anointed will be stricken.

They made his grave with the wicked, and with a rich man in his death; although he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased YAH to bruise him; he has put him to grief: when you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see [his] seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of YAH shall prosper in his hand. He shall see of the travail of his soul, [and] shall be satisfied: by the knowledge of himself shall my righteous servant justify many; and he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he poured out his soul to death, and was numbered with the transgressors: yet he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:9-12 RNEB)

We have also seen the same exact parallels in Leviticus 16 and Isaiah 53.

These things were done in Beit-Anyah beyond the Yarden, where Yochanan was immersing. The next day, he saw Yahshua coming to him, and said, “BEHOLD, THE LAMB OF ELOHIM, WHO TAKES AWAY THE SIN OF THE WORLD! (John 1:28-29 RNEB)
“Don’t think that I came to destroy the Torah [Law] or the Prophets. I didn’t come to destroy, but to fulfill. (Matthew 5:17 RNEB)
But the things which Elohim announced by the mouth of all his prophets, that the Anointed should suffer, he thus fulfilled. (Acts 3:18 RNEB)

This is the fulfillment of Isaiah 53, this was the propitiation of mans iniquity, however we’re still waiting on his second coming, so he can complete what he started.

For most certainly, I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the Torah [Law], until all things are accomplished. (Matthew 5:18 RNEB)

We’re still awaiting the anointed’s second coming to reign on David’s throne, and the heaven and earth have not passed away, so the law has not yet passed away.

Whoever, therefore, shall break one of these least commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven; but whoever shall do and teach them shall be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. For I tell you that unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, there is no way you will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. (Matthew 5:19-20 RNEB)

The Scribes and Pharisees were known to sit on Moshe’s seat as law givers. The anointed is saying unless your commitment to excellence and spiritual perfection by the law exceeds that of the Pharisees your not going to inherit the kingdom. Many people today say we don’t have to observe the law, however we’re seeing something completely different in the scripture.

searching for who or what kind of time the Spirit of the Anointed, which was in them, pointed to, when he predicted the sufferings of the Anointed, and the glories that would follow them. (1 Peter 1:11 RNEB)

In Acts 3 we read that the anointed has fulfilled the sufferings, and then said “not even one smallest letter or one tiny pen stroke shall in any way pass away from the Law, until all things are accomplished.” We’re currently waiting for a theocratic kingdom, the millennial reign of peace and righteousness. We’re not in this age yet, it’s however the esteem that will follow.

But Elohim commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, the Anointed died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we will be saved from Elohim’s wrath through him. For if, while we were enemies, we were reconciled to Elohim through the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we will be saved by his life. Not only so, but we also rejoice in Elohim through our Master Yahshua the Anointed, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. (Romans 5:8-11 RNEB)

The anointed fulfilled the sacrificial ordinances as it relates to atonement, he did not fulfill the Sabbath gatherings, which are signs between us and the Almighty Elohim. We can see these ordinances are signs, if we tell someone we’re keeping a Saturday Sabbath or a dietary code, they will ask if we’re Jewish. We stand out and are being marked among the people by our works.

How We Keep Yom Kippur Today

Yom Kippur is a day we meet as a assembly and fast both food and water to afflict our souls. It’s treated as a Sabbath, so we do no manner of work. The anointed fulfilled the blood sacrifice required for this day, however he did not fulfill the convocation and the non blood ordinances that govern the day.

This is the day that YAH gives everyone that observes the covenant to repent in a remorseful manner of the iniquity they have committed before him. It’s another day that he blots out iniquity, as long as we follow the statute of Yom Kippur and the covenant. This is the day he unbinds the sins that are presumptuous and inadvertent, as well as sins done in passion without willful defiance.

Therefore he is also able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to Elohim through him, seeing that he lives forever to make intercession for them. (Hebrews 7:25 RNEB)

Notice, Yahshua makes intercession. Many are teaching that Yahshua died to cover all sins past and present, if this is the case, then it should have been enough, there would not be any need for him to make intercession. Sadly, we continue to sin inadvertently through our own passion without willful disregard to the covenant, and also through the most horrific sin, those that are presumptuous, the ones in direct defiance of YAH. Yahshua covered all the sins that we performed BEFORE our purification, we were given a clean slate, but now there is no more sacrifice, he is now the high priest interceding on our behalf when we transgress the law.

Yom Kippur is a day we were given through grace to help us come into the fullness of his righteousness, it’s not a day that we earned.

For the Anointed hasn’t entered into holy places made with hands, which are representations of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of Elohim for us; (Hebrews 9:24 RNEB)

Today Yahshua stands in the presence of YAH as a priest who intercedes for those who have entered the covenant, but are still imperfect, and he’s a sacrifice to atone for the PAST sin of every new comer that enters the covenant.

Think about everything Elohim has provided, first, we had the sacrifices that were offered daily by the priest to cover the sins of the people, additionally, he gave ordinances for voluntary sacrifices, and finally he gave us Yom Kippur as a purgative, a process of flushing away every trace of iniquity from the community. The message is simple, YAH hates sin and has resorted to everything reasonable to remove it, so we can have fellowship with him in prayer and communion.
