Pentecost

The purpose of this study is to help provide understanding on the Sabbath convocation of Pentecost.

    YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and tell them, ’The set feasts of YAH, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my set feasts. (Leviticus 23:1-2 RNWEB)

The term feasts in the Hebrew is moed, which means appointed or fixed time. So when we see the term feast used were talking about a fixed or appointed time that has been set by the Most High.

This feast was proclaimed a holy convocation, which means a set-apart, sacred and sanctified assembly. So the feast of Pentecost is a holy sanctified assembly.

    “’Six days shall work be done: but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation; you shall do no manner of work. It is a Sabbath to YAH in all your dwellings. “’These are the set feasts of YAH, even holy convocations, which you shall proclaim in their appointed season. In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening, is YAH’s Passover. On the fifteenth day of the same month is the feast of unleavened bread to YAH. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. In the first day you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no regular work. But you shall offer an offering made by fire to YAH seven days. In the seventh day is a holy convocation: you shall do no regular work.’” YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and tell them, ’When you have come into the land which I give to you, and shall reap its harvest, then you shall bring the sheaf of the first fruits of your harvest to the Priest: and he shall wave the sheaf before YAH, to be accepted for you. On the next day after the Sabbath the Priest shall wave it. On the day when you wave the sheaf, you shall offer a male lamb without blemish a year old for a burnt offering to YAH. The meal offering with it shall be two tenth parts of an efah of fine flour mingled with oil, an offering made by fire to YAH for a sweet savor; and the drink offering with it shall be of wine, the fourth part of a hin. You shall eat neither bread, nor roasted grain, nor fresh grain, until this same day, until you have brought the offering of your Elohim. This is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. “’You shall count from the next day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven Sabbaths shall be completed: even to the next day after the seventh Sabbath you shall number fifty days; and you shall offer a new meal offering to YAH. The feast of Unleavened bread which proceeded Pentecost was a gathering we were commanded to observe by the Most High as a thanks giving feast, it took place at the time of first harvest. The first sheaves of the fields were brought up to the temple and the priests and the people ate it before the Most High. Sacrificial offerings were made at this time, however blood offerings are no longer required today because the Most High satisfied [fulfilled] all the sacrificial offerings in the body of the Anointed, but we are still require to keep the convocation which has not been fulfilled.

    You shall offer one male goat for a sin offering, and two male lambs a year old for a sacrifice of peace offerings. The Priest shall wave them with the bread of the first fruits for a wave offering before YAH, with the two lambs. They shall be holy to YAH for the Priest. (Leviticus 23:19-20 RNWEB)

Were now transitioning to Pentecost which is 50 days after Passover and a new meal offering is being presented to the Most High. What’s being offered up is the grains that are ready to harvest about fifty days after Passover, which would be wheat, rice and other fruits and vegetables. The Pagans have a day they give thanks for their harvest which is called Thanksgiving, this is when they celebrate and give thanks to their gods of harvest which dates all the way back to Babylonian times.

To clarify this a bit further, YAH assigned specific times to bring thanks giving for the harvest crops, the feasts for this are Unleavened bread, Pentecost, and Tabernacles, these are the fix times that anyone that serves the Most High has to give thanks giving. The pagans also give thanks giving, however they are not doing it during the appointed festivals given by the Most High, so they are giving thanks to a different god.

    You shall make proclamation on the same day: there shall be a holy convocation to you; you shall do no regular work. This is a statute forever in all your dwellings throughout your generations. (Leviticus 23:21 RNWEB)
    “You shall observe a feast to me three times a year. You shall observe the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib (for in it you came out from Egypt), and no one shall appear before me empty. And the Feast of Harvest, the first fruits of your labors, which you sow in the field: and the Feast of Harvest, at the end of the year, when you gather in your labors out of the field. Three times in the year all your males shall appear before YAH Elohim. “You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread, neither shall the fat of my feast remain all night until the morning. (Exodus 23:14-18 RNWEB)

These are supposed to be festive events, theocratic parties.

    “You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib; for in the month Abib you came out from Egypt. All that opens the womb is mine; and all your livestock that is male, the firstborn of cow and sheep. The firstborn of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb: and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. All the firstborn of your sons you shall redeem. No one shall appear before me empty. “Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest: in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. YOU SHALL OBSERVE THE FEAST OF WEEKS WITH THE FIRST FRUITS OF WHEAT HARVEST, and the Feast of ingatherings at the year’s end. (Exodus 34:18-22 RNWEB)

The feast of weeks is Pentecost, meaning fifty, because it occurred fifty days after unleavened bread.

    For Yochanan indeed purified in water, but you will be purified in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” Therefore, when they had come together, they asked him, “Master, are you now restoring the kingdom to Yisra’el?” (Acts 1:5-6 RNWEB)

The Christians are always talking about going to heaven, however the Hebrews were looking for the kingdom to be restored to Yisrael. The scriptures don’t promise heaven to man, it says the meek shall inherit the earth, and the righteous shall dwell there in.     He said to them, “It isn’t for you to know times or seasons which the Father has set within His own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you. You will be witnesses to me in Yerushalayim, in all Judah and Samaria, and to the uttermost parts of the earth.” (Acts 1:7-8 RNWEB)

When the verse says you shall receive power when the holy Spirit comes on you, it is specifically talking to the apostles. We cannot assume something spoken to a specific group of people two thousand years ago was meant for us today, this is a historical account of an event that has already occurred.

    When he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up, and a cloud received him out of their sight. While they were looking steadfastly into the sky as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white clothing, who also said, “You men of the Galil, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Yahshua, who was received up from you into the sky will come back in the same way as you saw him going into the sky.” Then they returned to Yerushalayim from the mountain called Olivet, which is near Yerushalayim, a Sabbath day’s journey away. When they had come in, they went up into the upper room, where they were staying; that is Peter, Yochanan, Jacob, Andrew, Philip, T’oma, Bar-Talmai, Mattityahu, Jacob Ben-Chalfai, Simon the Zealot, and Judah the son of Jacob. All these with one accord continued steadfastly in prayer and supplication, along with the women, and Miriam the mother of Yahshua, and with his brothers. In these days, Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (and the number of names was about one hundred twenty), and said, “Brothers, it was necessary that this Scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judah, who was guide to those who took Yahshua. For he was numbered with us, and received his portion in this ministry. Now this man obtained a field with the reward for his wickedness, and falling headlong, his body burst open, and all his intestines gushed out. It became known to everyone who lived in Yerushalayim that in their language that field was called ’Chakal-Dama,’ that is, ’The field of blood.’ For it is written in the book of Psalms, ’Let his habitation be made desolate. Let no one dwell therein;’ and, ’Let another take his office.’ “Of the men therefore who have accompanied us all the time that Master Yahshua went in and out among us, beginning from the immersion of Yochanan, to the day that he was received up from us, of these one must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” They put forward two, Yosef called Bar-Sabba, who was surnamed Justus, and Mattityah. They prayed, and said, “You, Master, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two you have chosen to take part in this ministry and office of emissary from which Judah fell away, that he might go to his own place.” They drew lots for them, and the lot fell on Mattityah, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. What they just did is choose someone to replace Judas the betrayer, so they numbered twelve again.

    Now when the day of Pentecost had come, they were all with one accord in one place. (Acts 2:1 RNWEB)

The day of Pentecost occurred ten days after the Anointed ascended into heaven for the final time.

    Suddenly there came from the sky a sound like the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. Tongues like fire appeared and were distributed to them, and one sat on each of them. They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as the Spirit gave them the ability to speak. (Acts 2:2-4 RNWEB)

The Apostles were gathered together on the day of Pentecost, the Anointed had told them ten days earlier to tarry in Yerushalayim until they were endowed with power from on high. So they had all gathered together to keep the feast of Pentecost at its appointed time and tarried there as the Anointed instructed.

    Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter said to them, “Repent, and be purified, every one of you, in the name of Yahshua the Anointed for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:37-38 RNWEB)

Pentecost was a mandatory holy day and all male Hebrews had to be present during this period, so there were men there from all over the land. Let’s look at where they came from:

    Parthians, Madai, Elamites, and people from Aram-Naharayim, Judah, Cappadocia, Pontus, Asia, Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt, the parts of Libya around Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians: we hear them speaking in our languages the mighty works of Elohim!” (Acts 2:9-11 RNWEB)

This was a perfect opportunity for the Spirit of the Most High to speak to all the chosen people about the new covenant. Peter spoke out and told them to repent and be purified in the name of Yahshua the Anointed for the forgiveness of sins, and you will receive the Holy Spirit. This is what was promised to the Apostles and the ones that they laid hands on during this period, about the first 50 years of the assembly, to do an ecclesiastical work. The evidence that Elohim presented to the Hebrews as a sign he ordained this was the Apostles were speaking in the languages of the lands the Hebrews had come from, which they had never learned.     For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all who are far off, even as many as YAH our Elohim will call to himself.” With many other words he testified, and exhorted them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation!” Then those who gladly received his word were purified. There were added that day about three thousand souls. (Acts 2:39-41 RNWEB)

Three thousand people were purified in the name of Yahshua the anointed, this happened because the Apostles were faithful in keeping the commandment of Elohim to keep the feast of Pentecost, not because they were waiting for the Spirit.

    But I will come to you when I have passed through Macedonia, for I am passing through Macedonia. But with you it may be that I will stay, or even winter, that you may send me on my journey wherever I go. For I do not wish to see you now in passing, but I hope to stay a while with you, if YAH permits. BUT I WILL STAY AT EPHESUS UNTIL PENTECOST, (1 Corinthians 16:5-8 RNWEB)

Sha’ul was going to tarry at Ephesus to keep the feast of Pentecost, twenty six years after the anointed’s death.

    He came to Ephesus, and he left them there; but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the Jews. When they asked him to stay with them a longer time, he declined; but taking his leave of them, and saying, “I MUST BY ALL MEANS KEEP THIS COMING FEAST IN YERUSHALAYIM, but I will return again to you if Elohim wills,” he set sail from Ephesus. (Acts 18:19-21 RNWEB)

Sha’ul wanted to keep the feast in Yerushalayim, this is because he was keeping the commandments of Elohim, some might argue he was going there to witness to the Jews, however Sha’ul was not called to the Jews, he was sent to the gentiles, lets verify this in scripture.

    Then after a period of fourteen years I went up again to Yerushalayim with Barnabas, taking Titus also with me. I went up by revelation, and I laid before them the Good News which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately before those who were respected, for fear that I might be running, or had run, in vain. But not even Titus, who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. This was because of the false brothers secretly brought in, who sneaked in to spy out our liberty which we have in Messiah Yahshua, that they might bring us into bondage; to whom we gave no place in the way of subjection, not for an hour, that the truth of the Good News might continue with you. But from those who were reputed to be important (whatever they were, it makes no difference to me; Elohim doesn’t show partiality to man)–they, I say, who were respected imparted nothing to me, but to the contrary, when they saw that I had been entrusted with the Good News for the uncircumcision, even as Peter with the Good News for the circumcision (for he who appointed Peter to be an emissary of the circumcision APPOINTED ME ALSO TO THE GENTILES); (Galatians 2:1-8 RNWEB)

Gentiles are not composed of all nationalities except Jews as many believe, they were a specific ethnic group called Indo-Eurasians.

    and when they perceived the grace that was given to me, Jacob and Peter and Yochanan, they who were reputed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship, that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcision. (Galatians 2:9 RNWEB)

Sha’ul with Barnabas at his side went to the Indo-Eurasians in Asia minor.

    After the uproar had ceased, Sha’ul sent for the disciples, took leave of them, and departed to go into Macedonia. When he had gone through those parts, and had encouraged them with many words, he came into Greece. When he had spent three months there, and a plot was made against him by Jews as he was about to set sail for Syria, he determined to return through Macedonia. These accompanied him as far as Asia: Sopater of Beroea; Aristarchus and Secundus of the Thessalonians; Gaius of Derbe; Timothy; and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia. But these had gone ahead, and were waiting for us at Troas. (Acts 20:1-5 RNWEB)

Sha’ul had committed his ministry to the Indo-Eurasians in Asia Minor.

    We sailed away from Philippi AFTER THE DAYS OF UNLEAVENED BREAD, and came to them at Troas in five days, where we stayed seven days. (Acts 20:6 RNWEB)

Unleavened bread was a feast that lasted seven days with a first and last day Sabbath convocation.

    On the first day of the week, when the disciples were gathered together to break bread, Sha’ul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and continued his speech until midnight. (Acts 20:7 RNWEB)

Many religious leaders try to use this verse to justify a Sunday Sabbath, however it only says the disciples were gathered, where is the rest of the people if it’s a sabbath convocation. The actual time this occurred was immediately after the Sabbath, which was sundown on the Sabbath day, the Hebrew days run from sunset to sunset. So the rest of the assembly had already left and the disciples, the ones responsible for field ministry were the only ones left. These were the ones Sha’ul stayed to speak with.

    There were many lights in the upper chamber where we were gathered together. A certain young man named Eutychus sat in the window, weighed down with deep sleep. As Sha’ul spoke still longer, being weighed down by his sleep, he fell down from the third story, and was taken up dead. Sha’ul went down, and fell upon him, and embracing him said, “Don’t be troubled, for his life is in him.” When he had gone up, and had broken bread, and eaten, and had talked with them a long while, even until break of day, he departed. They brought the boy in alive, and were greatly comforted. But we who went ahead to the ship set sail for Assos, intending to take Sha’ul aboard there, for he had so arranged, intending himself to go by land. When he met us at Assos, we took him aboard, and came to Mitylene. Sailing from there, we came the following day opposite Chios. The next day we touched at Samos and stayed at Trogyllium, and the day after we came to Miletus. For Sha’ul had determined to sail past Ephesus, that he might not have to spend time in Asia; FOR HE WAS HASTENING, IF IT WERE POSSIBLE FOR HIM, TO BE IN YERUSHALAYIM ON THE DAY OF PENTECOST. Sha’ul was trying to get to Yerushalayim for the Feast of Pentecost, this is about twenty six years after the Anointed had ascended.

Church Confessions

“As for their scrupulousness about meats, and their superstitions about the sabbath, and their much vaunted circumcision, and their pretentious festivals and new moon observances – all of them too nonsensical to be worth discussing….” (In a letter to Diognetus, Justin Martyr in the second century, statements made concerning Jewish practices:)

“As for their scrupulousness about meats, and their superstitions about the sabbath, and their much vaunted circumcision, and their pretentious festivals and new moon observances – all of them too nonsensical to be worth discussing….”

The Apostolic Fathers continued issuing statements clearly divorcing Christianity from anything Jewish. The Mosaic Law, including the Festivals and the Sabbath; circumcision; and Yisrael’s election by Elohim were all brushed away as things of the past. Also, in order to gain the acceptance of Rome, the now Gentile- dominated “Church” made it loud and clear that it had nothing in common with Judaism. In the Epistle of Ignatius, Bishop of Antioch, to the Magnesians in 115 CE, Christians were warned of the error of looking to Judaism:

“To profess Jesus Christ while continuing to follow Jewish customs is an absurdity. The Christian faith does not look to Judaism, but Judaism looks to Christianity….”

The teaching of the Church Fathers managed to invalidate Judaism in the eyes of the Gentile world. Although up until now the Jewish/Christian debate was not much more than a debate, the real turning point for the Jews in the Roman Christian world was the Council of Nicea, held in 325 CE. At this Council, Christianity became the official religion of the Roman State and the concepts and claims of the theologians were put into practice and the separation between Christianity and Judaism became official. Constantine, Emperor of Rome and leader of the Church declared:

“You should consider not only that the number of churches in these provinces make a majority, but also that it is right to demand what our reason approves, and that we should have nothing in common with the Jews.”

 

    But now in Messiah Yahshua you who once were far off are made near in the blood of Messiah. For he is our peace, who made both one, and broke down the middle wall of partition, having abolished in the flesh the hostility, the Torah of commandments contained in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man of the two, making peace; and might reconcile them both in one body to Elohim through the cross, having killed the hostility thereby. (Ephesians 2:13-16 RNWEB)

This is talking about bringing the Hebrew and gentile into one body. One was already in the body, which was the Hebrew, that is why the scriptures say, salvation to the Hebrew first than the Gentiles. This was talking about how the plan of salvation would be delivered.

    He came and preached peace to you who were far off and to those who were near. For through him we both have our access in one Spirit to the Father. So then you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens with the holy ones, and of the household of Elohim, being BUILT ON THE FOUNDATION OF THE APOSTLES AND PROPHETS, Messiah Yahshua himself being the chief cornerstone; (Ephesians 2:17-20 RNWEB)

The foundation was built on the Apostles and prophets and we have seen in scripture that the Apostles were keeping feasts and the commandment of Elohim, shouldn’t they be our example?

    in whom the whole building, fitted together, grows into a holy temple in YAH; in whom you also are built together for a habitation of Elohim in the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:21-22 RNWEB)
    YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak also to the children of Yisra’el, saying, ’Most certainly you shall KEEP MY SABBATHS: FOR IT IS A SIGN BETWEEN ME AND YOU THROUGHOUT YOUR GENERATIONS; THAT YOU MAY KNOW THAT I AM YAH WHO SANCTIFIES YOU. (Exodus 31:12-13 RNWEB)

The Sabbaths were given as a sign between us and Elohim for all generations and its by keeping these signs that we are sanctified.

  • The weekly Sabbath is a sign that marks and sanctifies us to the Most High.
  • Passover is a sign that marks and sanctifies us to the Most High.
  • Pentecost is a sign that marks and sanctifies us to the Most High.
  • Tabernacles is a sign that marks and sanctifies us to the Most High.
  • Trumpets is a sign that marks and sanctifies us to the Most High.
  • Day of atonement is a sign that marks and sanctifies us to the Most High.
  • New moon Sabbath is a sign that marks and sanctifies us to the Most High.

Were marked and sanctified by our acts of obedience to the Most High, to gain a better understanding of all the commands that sanctify us please read the article on The Sanctified.

Do you see why it is important to keep the appointed times of Elohim? So if your keeping Sunday as your Sabbath (Venerable day solis) your not marked and sanctified by the Most High, your marked by a different process and system.

    Therefore the children of Yisra’el shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Yisra’el forever; for in six days YAH made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.’” (Exodus 31:16-17 RNWEB)
    Circumcision is nothing, and uncircumcision is nothing, but the keeping of the commandments of Elohim. (1 Corinthians 7:19 RNWEB)

The emphases here is obviously on the important’s of keeping the commandments of Elohim.

    For there is no partiality with Elohim. For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without the law. As many as have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it isn’t the hearers of the law who are righteous before Elohim, BUT THE DOERS OF THE LAW WILL BE JUSTIFIED. (Romans 2:11-13 RNWEB)

There is no partiality with Elohim, which means that he treats all humanity the same, his commandments are for everyone. The commandments and ordinances were first given to the sons of Yisrael to practice and learn, then they were to teach the nations how to enter the ecclesiastical body and serve Elohim in a theocratic manner.

    What good is it, my brothers, if a man says he has faith, but has no works? Can faith save him? And if a brother or sister is naked and in lack of daily food, and one of you tells them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled;” and yet you didn’t give them the things the body needs, what good is it? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead in itself. Yes, a man will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works, and I by my works will show you my faith. You believe that Elohim is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder. But do you want to know, vain man, that faith apart from works is dead? (James 2:14-20 RNWEB)
