Sabbath: Liberty or Affliction

This study is a continuation of the article “The Sabbath,” with more insight on its purpose and what it represents in the overall order of things.

The objective of this study is to take a serious look at why the Sabbath is so important. There are many views regarding the Sabbath, some are according to the letter of YAH’s law and others according to the principals. We will examine the scripture to correct many of the different conclusions various religious bodies have formulated that have been wrapped in error.

Principal – The first, highest or foremost in importance, rank, worth, or degree.

Many people dread the Sabbath day because they look at it as being a burden, generally because there following acetic or orthodox traditional views established by the Pharisees as well as the unlearned teachers whose views don’t align with the word of Elohim. Through our analysis of the scripture we will be answering the following questions:

  • What are the prohibitions on servile work and laborious tasks done for monetary gain?
  • Can laborious tasks be done out of necessity?
  • Can we buy and sell on the Sabbath?

There is no prohibition of buying, just selling on the Sabbath in YAH’s law, however to buy there has to be a seller. Therefore we need to be sensitive to the fact that the seller will not have the pleasure of celebrating the Sabbath and we may be sharing in there intentional trespass, unless it is an occupation of necessity.

    In the beginning Elohim created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty. Darkness was on the surface of the deep. Elohim’s Spirit was hovering over the surface of the waters. Elohim said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. Elohim saw the light, and saw that it was good. Elohim divided the light from the darkness. Elohim called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. There was evening and there was morning, one day. Elohim said, “Let there be an expanse in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Elohim made the expanse, and divided the waters which were under the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. Elohim called the expanse sky. There was evening and there was morning, a second day. Elohim said, “Let the waters under the sky be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear;” and it was so. Elohim called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters he called Seas. Elohim saw that it was good. Elohim said, “Let the earth put forth grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit after their kind, with its seed in it, on the earth;” and it was so. The earth brought forth grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit, with its seed in it, after their kind; and Elohim saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a third day. Elohim said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of sky to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of sky to give light on the earth;” and it was so. Elohim made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars. Elohim set them in the expanse of sky to give light to the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. Elohim saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. Elohim said, “Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth in the open expanse of sky.” Elohim created the large sea creatures, and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and every winged bird after its kind. Elohim saw that it was good. Elohim blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” There was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. Elohim said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, livestock, creeping things, and animals of the earth after their kind;” and it was so. Elohim made the animals of the earth after their kind, and the livestock after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind. Elohim saw that it was good. Elohim said, “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over the livestock, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” (Gen 1:1-26 RNWEB)

Everything YAH did during creation was well thought out and in good order. For example the entire eco system was put in place before animals were brought on the seen. Before man was made the water, animals, insects, and vegetation that were required to support life were all in place and each system was self sustaining, there was balance and everything was connected, life couldn’t be sustained if any one component didn’t exist or was not functioning properly.

    No plant of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up; for YAH Elohim had not caused it to rain on the earth. There was not a man to till the ground, (Gen 2:5 RNWEB)

Man was created on the sixth day, he was the last thing created, he was given dominion over the earth and it was his job to take care of it.

    The heavens and the earth were finished, and all their vast array. On the seventh day Elohim finished his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. Elohim blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because he rested in it from all his work which he had created and made. (Gen 2:1-3 RNWEB)

Elohim was creating, making, working, and performing laborious tasks for the first six days. Man was created and we can clearly see it was to serve the Most High. All the creatures on the earth were created to serve man, and he was created to serve the Most High. The Most High after laboring for six days blessed the seventh, set it aside, and commanded man to do the same. For six days man was to take care of the earth and on the seventh rest, literally take a breath.

    “Remember the day of Sabbath, to keep it holy. You shall labor six days, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to YAH your Elohim. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; for in six days YAH made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore YAH blessed the day of Sabbath, and made it holy. (Exo 20:8-11 RNWEB)

If we look at this rule according to the letter, we would have no law enforcement, medical personal, utility workers, and many other needed occupations that may be required to work on the Sabbath. For example what if there’s and accident, or in the middle winter you loose your heat, or someone gets hurt and there is no one to call? This is why Yahshua said “have you not read in the Torah, that on the day of Sabbath, the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless?”

Labor in verse eight is the Hebrew word Abad which means:

  • To labour, work, do work.
  • To work for another, serve another by labour.
  • To serve as subjects.
  • To serve (Elohim).
  • To serve (with Levitical service).
  • To be worked, be tilled (of land).
  • To make oneself a servant to be worked.
  • To compel to labour or work, cause to labour, cause to serve.
  • To cause to serve as subjects.
  • To be led or enticed to serve.

Work in verse eight is the Hebrew word melakah which means:

  • Occupation, work, business.
  • Work (something done or made), to create.
  • Workmanship.
  • Service, use.
  • Public business, political or religous.

Yahshua said to the priests, on the Sabbath day you circumcise a man so the law would not be broken, yet you accuse me because I make every man whole on the Sabbath. He said don’t judge by the appearance but after righteousness, he was telling them they were oppressing themselves.

    Moshe assembled all the congregation of the children of Yisra’el, and said to them, “These are the words which YAH has commanded, that you should do them. ‘Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of solemn rest to YAH: whoever does any work in it shall be put to death. You shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations on the day of Sabbath.'” (Exo 35:1-3 RNWEB)

When the law says “you shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations on the day of Sabbath,” what does it mean? If we take it literally we can’t turn the heat on in our house or start the car. We need to look into the things that Moshe may not have defined clearly and pay closer attention to things the Most High gave us the principals of through examples and illustrations. The operative word that we need to be concerned about on the Sabbath is WORK. When you start the car or turn up the thermostat in your home, are you working?

Traditional Beliefs

The Karites believe since the origin of this commandment as well as the one prohibiting work on the Sabbath are similar, and that since one cannot continue work that was started before the Sabbath on the Sabbath, that one may not continue to burn a fire which was started before the Sabbath. In fact they extinguish any fires previously started, do to their comprehension of the Torahs commandment not to kindle a fire on the Sabbath.

Orthodoxy on the other hand believes so long as a light was lit before the Sabbath begins and it is not turned on and off during the Sabbath it’s ok. Furthermore cyclic appliances such as a heater or air conditioner must be set before the Sabbath begins and not controlled during the Sabbath. If the heater comes on to maintain the preset temperature it’s permitted, one must be careful to enter the house quickly so as not to trip the switch and cause the heater to come on, unfortunately often there is little difference except for intentionally throwing switches between the Sabbath and a regular day.

Jewish practitioners light candles before sunset on Friday night and say a blessing over them stating that Elohim commanded the lighting of the Sabbath lights. This is clearly putting words into Elohim’s mouth since there is no such commandment in the Torah and is to be avoided.

Yacobites take special care to prevent kindling a fire during the Sabbath by setting environmental controls to such a level that they either are unlikely to come on at all or at least very in frequently. The commandments were given that we might live by them, not die by them. So we avoid falls, frostbite, and heat stroke on this most joyous day of our heritage. We also extinguish all fires for cooking before sundown, by definition cook is to prepare food by warming it. We believe leaving the crock pot on over Shabbat is a violation of the Torah, many otherwise pious Hebrews keep food warm in the crock pot on a very low burner on Shabbat. In addition to the above comments scripture seems to disagree with this practice.

    Remember me, my Elohim, concerning this, and don’t wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my Elohim, and for the observances of it. (Neh 13:14 RNWEB)

Nehemiah’s asking Elohim to remember his good works.

    In those days saw I in Judah some men treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading donkeys [therewith]; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Yerushalayim on the day of Sabbath: and I testified [against them] in the day in which they sold food. There lived men of Tzor also therein, who brought in fish, and all manner of wares, and sold on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Yerushalayim. (Neh 13:15-16 RNWEB)

These people were working, producing, and creating to sell items for monetary gain on the Sabbath. Remember the emphases for this day is on rest, not work.

    Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the day of Sabbath? Didn’t your fathers do thus, and did not our Elohim bring all this evil on us, and on this city? yet you bring more wrath on Yisra’el by profaning the Sabbath. It came to pass that, when the gates of Yerushalayim began to be dark before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut, and commanded that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath: and some of my servants set I over the gates, that there should no burden be brought in on the day of Sabbath. So the merchants and sellers of all kind of wares lodged outside of Yerushalayim once or twice. Then I testified against them, and said to them, Why lodge you about the wall? if you do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time forth came they no more on the Sabbath. I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves, and that they should come and keep the gates, to sanctify the day of Sabbath. Remember to me, my Elohim, this also, and spare me according to the greatness of your loving kindness. (Neh 13:17-22 RNWEB)

Let’s look at what Nehemiah was speaking about.

    Thus says YAH, Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the day of Sabbath, nor bring it in by the gates of Yerushalayim; neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the day of Sabbath holy, neither do any work: but make the day of Sabbath, as I commanded your fathers. But they didn’t listen, neither turn their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, and might not receive instruction. It shall happen, if you diligently listen to me, says YAH, to bring in no burden through the gates of this city on the day of Sabbath, but to make the day of Sabbath holy, to do no work therein; then shall there enter in by the gates of this city kings and princes sitting on the throne of David, riding in chariots and on horses, they, and their princes, the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Yerushalayim; and this city shall remain forever. They shall come from the cities of Judah, and from the places round about Yerushalayim, and from the land of Binyamin, and from the lowland, and from the hill country, and from the South, bringing burnt offerings, and sacrifices, and meal offerings, and frankincense, and bringing [sacrifices of] thanksgiving, to the house of YAH. But if you will not listen to me to make the day of Sabbath holy, and not to bear a burden and enter in at the gates of Yerushalayim on the day of Sabbath; then will I kindle a fire in the gates of it, and it shall devour the palaces of Yerushalayim, and it shall not be quenched. (Jer 17:21-27 RNWEB)

This judgment occurred through King Nevukhadnetzar who came in and burned Yerushalayim. One of the reasons for this was the Hebrews were treating the Sabbath day as a regular day, it was not set apart as commanded in Torah. Laborious or burdensome tasks needed to be done during the first six days.

    I gave them my statutes, and shown them my ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live in them. Moreover also I gave them my Sabbaths, to be a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am YAH who sanctifies them. (Eze 20:11-12 RNWEB)
    I said to their children in the wilderness, Don’t you walk in the statutes of your fathers, neither observe their ordinances, nor defile yourselves with their idols. I am YAH your Elohim: walk in my statutes, and keep my ordinances, and do them; and make my Sabbaths holy; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am YAH your Elohim. But the children rebelled against me; they didn’t walk in my statutes, neither kept my ordinances to do them, which if a man do, he shall live in them; they profaned my Sabbaths. Then I said I would pour out my wrath on them, to accomplish my anger against them in the wilderness. (Eze 20:18-21 RNWEB)

Notice Sabbaths is plural, it’s talking about all the appointed times of YAH.

    Nevertheless I withdrew my hand, and worked for my name’s sake, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I brought them forth. Moreover I swore to them in the wilderness, that I would scatter them among the nations, and disperse them through the countries; because they had not executed my ordinances, but had rejected my statutes, and had profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were after their fathers’ idols. (Eze 20:22-24 RNWEB)
    Cry aloud, don’t spare, lift up your voice like a trumpet, and declare to my people their disobedience, and to the house of Jacob their sins. Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and didn’t forsake the ordinance of their Elohim, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to Elohim. Why have we fasted, [say they], and you don’t see? [why] have we afflicted our soul, and you take no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast you find [your own] pleasure, and exact all your labors. (Isa 58:1-3 RNWEB)

This verse is specifically talking about Yom Kippur not the weekly Sabbath. The people made excuses to profane it, they didn’t see any need to fast since they assumed YAH wouldn’t know if they did or didn’t.

    If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath, from doing your pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, [and] the holy of YAH honorable; and shall honor it, not doing your own ways, nor finding your own pleasure, nor speaking [your own] words: (Isa 58:13 RNWEB)

Nowhere in the law does it say we can’t participate in the things we enjoy on the weekly Sabbath, this verse is also speaking about the day of the fast, Yom Kippur, also known as the day of atonement. On this day we must sacrifice our normal pleasures, food, and water.

    YAH spoke to Moshe, saying, “Speak also to the children of Yisra’el, saying, ‘Most certainly you shall keep my Sabbaths: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that you may know that I am YAH who sanctifies you. You shall keep the Sabbath therefore; for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to YAH. Whoever does any work on the day of Sabbath shall surely be put to death. Therefore the children of Yisra’el shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between me and the children of Yisra’el forever; for in six days YAH made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.'” (Exo 31:12-17 RNWEB)

So far in this study we have been looking at the letter and principal of the Sabbath. We see it’s a day of rest and relaxation, a day we cease from our work, anything of a laborious nature. The principal behind the Sabbath is to take a breath on the seventh day and cease from the normal duties and obligations of the first six days.

    He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the day of Sabbath, and stood up to read. The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written, “The Spirit of YAH is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are oppressed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of YAH.” He closed the book, gave it back to the shammash, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Luke 4:16-21 RNWEB)

This was Yahshua’s inaugural address proclaiming the beginning of his work, which was to unearth all the lies, deceit, false interpretations, and traditions of zealous misdirected men.

    It happened that he was going on the day of Sabbath through the grain fields, and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of grain. (Mark 2:23 RNWEB)

The disciples were not working, they were not gathering in sheaves, they were not performing a laborious task. As they were walking they were plucking heads of barley and eating them because they were hungry.

    The Pharisees said to him, “Behold, why do they do that which is not lawful on the day of Sabbath?” (Mark 2:24 RNWEB)

According to the law, we are not to work, but rest. Plucking barley while walking through the fields is not work.

    He said to them, “Did you never read what David did, when he had need, and was hungry–he, and those who were with him? How he entered into the house of Elohim when Avyatar was Priest Gadol, and ate the show bread, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests, and gave also to those who were with him?” He said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. (Mark 2:25-27 RNWEB)

The Sabbath was made for Adam and not Adam for the Sabbath. He made Adam to work, to till the ground. For six days man/Adam was to labor and on the seventh rest. The Sabbath day was made for Adam and we are all his descendants. Whatever form of relaxation we consider good, within the moral guidelines of the law, we can take part in on the Sabbath and enjoy it. We just need to stay away from any burdens that are oppressive. In other words the Most High is saying I’m giving you a day to relax and refresh, don’t work unless it’s an absolute necessity.

    He entered again into the synagogue, and there was a man there who had his hand withered. They watched him, whether he would heal him on the day of Sabbath, that they might accuse him. He said to the man who had his hand withered, “Stand up.” He said to them, “Is it lawful on the day of Sabbath to do good, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?” But they were silent. (Mark 3:1-4 RNWEB)
    At that time, Yahshua went on the day of Sabbath through the grain fields. His disciples were hungry and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said to him, “Behold, your disciples do what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath.” But he said to them, “Haven’t you read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him; how he entered into the house of Elohim, and ate the show bread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for those who were with him, but only for the priests? Or have you not read in the Torah, that on the day of Sabbath, the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless? (Matthew 12:1-5 RNWEB)

The priests worked on the Sabbath, they offered sacrifices, and did circumcisions, there guiltless because it was done out of necessity.

    But I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. But if you had known what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the guiltless. For the Son of Man is Master of the Sabbath.” (Matthew 12:6-8 RNWEB)
    Moshe has given you circumcision (not that it is of Moshe, but of the fathers), and on the Sabbath you circumcise a boy. If a boy receives circumcision on the Sabbath, that the Torah of Moshe may not be broken, are you angry with me, because I made a man every bit whole on the Sabbath? Don’t judge according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.” (John 7:22-24 RNWEB)

Yahshua used many examples in scripture to show if there is a necessity it could be done on the Sabbath, for example he asked the Pharisees if they fed there animals on the Sabbath, he also showed us that we’re not supposed to do anything that is intensive and laborious, something oppressive, burdensome, or occupational, all other things are acceptable.

    saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moshe’ seat. (Matthew 23:2 RNWEB)

This means they put themselves in the position of law givers, amending and appending, directing and enforcing.

    For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them. (Matthew 23:4 RNWEB)

They couldn’t keep there own laws because the burdens they were imposing couldn’t be kept by anyone.

    Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel around by sea and land to make one proselyte; and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much of a son of Gehinnom as yourselves. (Matthew 23:15 RNWEB)

The Pharisees would travel across the land to bring others into the culture of Yisrael, however because they put themselves in the position of law givers by adding and amending to the Torah they were indoctrinating them into a false religion based on mans traditions and not the pure word of Elohim.

    “Now these are the ordinances which you shall set before them. “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years and in the seventh he shall go out free without paying anything. If he comes in by himself, he shall go out by himself. If he is married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself. But if the servant shall plainly say, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children. I will not go out free;’ then his master shall bring him to Elohim, and shall bring him to the door or to the doorpost, and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him for ever. (Exodus 21:1-6 RNWEB)

This is one of the origins of ear piercing, which was directly associated with slavery.

This law says if a Hebrew has a servant or slave he is to be in subjection to his master for six years and in the seventh year set free.

    I will bring the land into desolation; and your enemies that dwell therein will be astonished at it. I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you: and your land will be a desolation, and your cities shall be a waste. Then the land will enjoy its sabbaths as long as it lies desolate and you are in your enemies’ land. Even then the land will rest and enjoy its sabbaths. (Leviticus 26:32-34 RNWEB)
    YAH said to Moshe in Mount Sinai, “Speak to the children of Yisra’el, and tell them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a Sabbath to YAH. Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in its fruits; but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to YAH. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. What grows of itself in your harvest you shall not reap, and the grapes of your undressed vine you shall not gather. It shall be a year of solemn rest for the land. The Sabbath of the land shall be for food for you; for yourself, for your servant, for your maid, for your hired servant, and for your stranger, who lives as a foreigner with you. For your livestock also, and for the animals that are in your land, shall all the increase of it be for food. (Leviticus 25:1-7 RNWEB)

In the seventh year they were to let the land rest.

    “‘You shall count off seven Sabbaths of years, seven times seven years; and there shall be to you the days of seven Sabbaths of years, even forty-nine years. Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month. On the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land. You shall make the fiftieth year holy, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee to you; and each of you shall return to his own property, and each of you shall return to his family. (Leviticus 25:8-10 RNWEB)

This occurred after seven periods of seven years, what we should be seeing in these scriptures is the Sabbath is part of a bigger overall picture.

    Therefore he brought on them the king of the Kasdim, who killed their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or gray-headed: he gave them all into his hand. All the vessels of the house of Elohim, great and small, and the treasures of the house of YAH, and the treasures of the king, and of his princes, all these he brought to Babel. They burnt the house of Elohim, and broke down the wall of Yerushalayim, and burnt all the palaces of it with fire, and destroyed all the goodly vessels of it. He carried those who had escaped from the sword away to Babel; and they were servants to him and his sons until the reign of the kingdom of Paras: to fulfill the word of YAH by the mouth of Yirmeyahu, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths: [for] as long as it lay desolate it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years. (2 Chronicles 36:17-21 RNWEB)

The children of Yisrael were told to let the land rest every seven years, and they weren’t doing it, so the Most High put the children of Yisrael in captivity, one year for every seventh year they did not let the land rest.

The emphasis is on rest, the people worked the land as part of their occupation.

    The word that came to Yirmeyahu from YAH, after that the king Tzidkiyahu had made a covenant with all the people who were at Yerushalayim, to proclaim liberty to them; that every man should let his male servant, and every man his female servant, who is a Hebrew or a Hebrewess, go free; that none should make bondservants of them, [to wit], of a Hebrew his brother. All the princes and all the people obeyed, who had entered into the covenant, that everyone should let his male servant, and everyone his female servant, go free, that none should make bondservants of them any more; they obeyed, and let them go: but afterwards they turned, and caused the servants and the handmaids, whom they had let go free, to return, and brought them into subjection for servants and for handmaids. (Jeremiah 34:8-11 RNWEB)

When they heard the law, they let there servants go free, however they changed there minds and made them return.

    Therefore the word of YAH came to Yirmeyahu from YAH, saying, (Jeremiah 34:12 RNWEB)

YAH is speaking forth his law concerning this situation, were measured by his standards not what seems right in our minds.

    Thus says YAH, the Elohim of Yisra’el: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying, At the end of seven years you shall let go every man his brother who is a Hebrew, who has been sold to you, and has served you six years, you shall let him go free from you: but your fathers didn’t listen to me, neither inclined their ear. You were now turned, and had done that which is right in my eyes, in proclaiming liberty every man to his neighbor; and you had made a covenant before me in the house which is called by my name: but you turned and profaned my name, and caused every man his servant, and every man his handmaid, whom you had let go free at their pleasure, to return; and you brought them into subjection, to be to you for servants and for handmaids. Therefore thus says YAH: you have not listened to me, to proclaim liberty, every man to his brother, and every man to his neighbor: behold, I proclaim to you a liberty, says YAH, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine; and I will make you to be tossed back and forth among all the kingdoms of the earth. I will give the men who have transgressed my covenant, who have not performed the words of the covenant which they made before me, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts of it; the princes of Judah, and the princes of Yerushalayim, the eunuchs, and the priests, and all the people of the land, who passed between the parts of the calf; I will even give them into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life; and their dead bodies shall be for food to the birds of the sky, and to the animals of the earth. Tzidkiyahu king of Judah and his princes will I give into the hand of their enemies, and into the hand of those who seek their life, and into the hand of the king of Babel’s army, who have gone away from you. Behold, I will command, says YAH, and cause them to return to this city; and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Judah a desolation, without inhabitant. (Jeremiah 34:13-22 RNWEB)

The Most High is angry and declared his judgment, this is because his Sabbaths are part of the covenant, the Sabbaths are very important to him and serve a purpose.

    From that time, Yahshua began to show his disciples that he must go to Yerushalayim and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. (Matthew 16:21 RNWEB)
    For the Son of Man will come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and then he will render to everyone according to his deeds. Most certainly I tell you, there are some standing here who will in no way taste of death, until they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom.” (Matthew 16:27-28 RNWEB)

Yahshua said some of the disciples would not taste death until they saw the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom. If this was a literal statement then we have men walking the earth that are over two thousand years old, it would also go against the declaration given at the fall of Adam that man shall die within a day, a day being the equivalent of one thousand years.

    After six days, Yahshua took with him Peter, Jacob, and Yochanan his brother, and brought them up into a high mountain by themselves. He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his garments became as white as the light. (Matthew 17:1-2 RNWEB)

After six days Yahshua took some of his disciples, now remember the Sabbatical day of liberty is after six days, on the seventh. Yahshua led them up the mountain and was transfigured before them, Yahshua had not receive his new body at this point, and wouldn’t until he was raised from the grave, so what was happening? He was showing them of the seventh day Sabbatical, those of the resurrection in a vision. Elijah and Moshe represented the type of people that will be raised from the graves and receive immortality in the first resurrection. We should be looking at Elijah and Moshe as an example of the character and spiritual requirements to enter the Kingdom.

    As they were coming down from the mountain, Yahshua commanded them, saying, “Don’t tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead.” (Matthew 17:9 RNWEB)
    Let us fear therefore, lest perhaps anyone of you should seem to have come short of a promise of entering into his rest. For indeed we have had good news preached to us, even as they also did, but the word they heard didn’t profit them, because it wasn’t mixed with faith by those who heard. For we who have believed do enter into that rest, even as he has said, “As I swore in my wrath, they will not enter into my rest;” although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he has said this somewhere about the seventh day, “Elohim rested on the seventh day from all his works;” and in this place again, “They will not enter into my rest.” Seeing therefore it remains that some should enter therein, and they to whom the good news was before preached failed to enter in because of disobedience, he again defines a certain day, today, saying through David so long a time afterward (just as has been said), “Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts.” For if Yahoshua had given them rest, he would not have spoken afterward of another day. There remains therefore a Sabbath rest for the people of Elohim. (Hebrews 4:1-9 RNWEB)

The Sabbath rest for the children of Elohim in this verse is not referring to the weekly Sabbath.

    For he who has entered into his rest has himself also rested from his works, as Elohim did from his. Let us therefore give diligence to enter into that rest, lest anyone fall after the same example of disobedience. (Hebrews 4:10-11 RNWEB)

Let’s find out what rest he’s talking about.

    For YAH will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Yisra’el, and set them in their own land. The foreigner will join himself with them, and they will unite with the house of Jacob. The peoples will take them, and bring them to their place. The house of Yisra’el will possess them in YAH’s land for servants and for handmaids. They will take as captives those whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors. (Isaiah 14:1-2 RNWEB)

This has not happen yet, it’s referring to the restoration of Yisrael, however look at the time line and the words being used.

    It will happen in the day that YAH will give you rest from your sorrow, from your trouble, and from the hard service in which you were made to serve, (Isaiah 14:3 RNWEB)

The emphases on the Sabbath is to rest, this is referring to the millennial rest period, however what were being given rest from can be applied to the weekly Sabbath.

    that you will take up this parable against the king of Babel, and say, “How the oppressor has ceased! The golden city has ceased!” YAH has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, who struck the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, who ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that none restrained. The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet. They break out song. (Isaiah 14:4-7 RNWEB)

The earth is at rest and quiet because at this point the righteous have entered the millennial Sabbath rest and everyone is rejoicing.

    Yes, the fir trees rejoice with you, with the cedars of Levanon, saying, “Since you are humbled, no lumberjack has come up against us.” (Isaiah 14:8 RNWEB)

Who is the “you” being referred to?

    I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. He seized the dragon, the old serpent, which is the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole inhabited earth, and bound him for a thousand years, (Revelation 20:1-2 RNWEB)

He was bound for the millennium of rest.

    and cast him into the abyss, and shut it, and sealed it over him, that he should deceive the nations no more, until the thousand years were finished. After this, he must be freed for a short time. (Revelation 20:3 RNWEB)

The whole world is at rest now that he has been cast down, the Sabbath is much bigger than just a weekly convocation, and we need to understand all the principals behind it. This is a day where we turn from any laborious tasks that we partake of on the other six days, forget our burdens and take a breath, rest and do what we find relaxing and rejuvenating. We can do whatever we want within the mandated guidelines, and we must be sure to be sensitive about doing something that would put others to labor on this day.

    Behold, YAH makes the earth empty, makes it waste, turns it upside down, and scatters its inhabitants. It will be as with the people, so with the Priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the creditor, so with the debtor; as with the taker of interest, so with the giver of interest. The earth will be utterly emptied and utterly laid waste; for YAH has spoken this word. The earth mourns and fades away. The world languishes and fades away. The lofty people of the earth languish. The earth also is polluted under its inhabitants, because they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, and broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, and those who dwell therein are found guilty. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left. (Isaiah 24:1-6 RNWEB)

YAH has cursed everything, the first curse was death because of Adam, and then he began to put additional curses because of mans disobedience to the laws, precepts, and statutes he set forth.

    He showed me a river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of Elohim and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruits, yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. There will be no curse any more. The throne of Elohim and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants serve him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. There will be no night, and they need no lamp light; for YAH Elohim will illuminate them. They will reign forever and ever. (Revelation 22:1-5 RNWEB)

Summing Up

Man has tried to make the Sabbath a day of oppression, where clearly scripture shows it as a day of rest. It’s common for man to introduce his own personal opinions and pervert what Elohim is saying. The Sabbath is a day we should do whatever we find relaxing, we should literally take a breath. If we’re in a situation where we have to perform a burdensome act on the Sabbath out of necessity it’s allowable, just as the priests were held blameless even though they profaned the Sabbath by performing there normal acts of service. We do need to be careful not to use this liberty as an excuse to profane the Sabbath when it suits are needs, not everything is a necessity and the Most High can’t be fooled, he knows our thoughts and intentions.
